Re: acceptable distance for 9' 5 wt.
"double nymph"? If I had a double nymph, I wouldn't be...yeah, seriously, I sometimes think I am expecting too much too soon.
Thanks,
John

Re: acceptable distance for 9' 5 wt.
OK. Will give it a try. Let's see, that's...74 things to remember during a two second cast. Maybe it is rocket science, after all. Y'all didn't think I was counting, did you? :D
Thanks,
John

Re: acceptable distance for 9' 5 wt.
Thanks, Dan. I guess I could say I'm 100% over it now. Started out as pain in my left arm, which was kind of scary. Better Half browbeat me into an emergency room, turned out to be a pinched...

Re: acceptable distance for 9' 5 wt.
Thanks to all of you. I am getting some practice in now that the weather has improved, and will continue to do so. I actually have put some 6 wt. line on my 5 wt. rod and am trying that now. It...

Re: acceptable distance for 9' 5 wt.
When it warms up some, I'll do that. Since I started this thread, I've had some problems with a pinched nerve in my neck, and haven't been able to practice. I think by the time warm weather gets...

Re: acceptable distance for 9' 5 wt.
Thanks. I think I'm going to try a heavier line. I've just put in too much practice with what I have, and really not seen a lot of improvement as of late.

Re: acceptable distance for 9' 5 wt.
Thanks, Dan. Last night I couldn't have cast a 10 oz. sinker on a broomstick. The night before I was pretty well pleased. I know, I know-practice, practice...

Re: acceptable distance for 9' 5 wt.
Oh, I'm trying to increase my distance, but I feel like I've come a long way in less than 3 months. I am working on double hauling but that's coming slow. But in late July, I couldn't tie the fly...

Re: acceptable distance for 9' 5 wt.
Well, guys, I never expected so much response, but thanks to all who took the time.
I doubt I'll be fishing any streams, rather lakes for panfish and bass, and 40- 45 ft. seemed to me to be...

acceptable distance for 9' 5 wt.
I been practicing for almost three months now, and have seen great improvement. I'm using 9 ft. rod with 5 wt. WF line, and casting fairly accurately at 35-40 feet. There's a bare spot in the grass...

Re: fly line to leader loop
Thanks. Does the perfection loop have any advantages over the surgeon's loop? I can tie either, but the surgeon's loop is easier.

fly line to leader loop
In order to change leaders quickly, or frequently, is OK to use a loop to loop connection, with a perfection loop or surgeon's loop? Will loops affect casting?
Thanks for being patient with a...

Re: New caster problems
Thanks, Silver...think I've probably already shortened it that much from wind knots. Should be called "greenhorn knots". Still practicing every night. Some casts are decent, some not so much.

Re: New caster problems
Thanks. Is that sort of a rule of thumb that the leader be approximately the same length as the rod?

Re: New caster problems
Well, I only have one rod and one line, so I guess I'll use it until I get better and buy another. I'll try the grass leader, although the link said a 12' leader. Wouldn't that be too long for a 9'...

Re: New caster problems
You say the rod should point to about 10:30. Do you mean on a false cast or the actual cast?
Thanks,
John

Hello to all
Hey, everyone. My name is John and I just started fly fishing, or more accurately, practicing fly casting. There are no trout in my area, to speak of, but I can't wait to try the bream and maybe...
