Re: Fall 2014 Landlocked Salmon thread

Those are beauties, Plecain!

I had an unusual and unexpected shot at some salmon last Sunday -- went out on Champlain with a buddy to try for some lake trout off one of the breakwaters. It was...

Re: Fall 2014 Landlocked Salmon thread

So, how'd everyone do? As it turned out I never got back out after them again this fall. Hit my local trout streams plenty more, but one salmon trip was all I clocked this year.

Anyone else...

Re: Best Bass Flies

BigJim, that's a great collection.

There's not that much that bass won't eat if you find them in the mood.

Here are some of the sinking patterns I like.

Re: Autumn and Atlantics

Sweet, man. The surroundings alone look worth the trip -- and those are some fine fish, too.

Re: Nymphing for big trout?

Yeah, put a nymph right in front of a big trout that's eating nymphs. What makes streamers "easier" is that a big fish will move for a big meal. It's not economical for a four pound trout to travel...

Re: Streamer junkies!

^^ adding to the above -- where the fishing is visual, keep your nerves steady. This time of year in VT I seem to get a lot of long follows, where the trout might hang just inches behind the...

Re: Fishing Streamer water with a small Dry Fly…

Nice!

Now, how did you detect your hookups? Did the line go tight, or could you see the take? Maybe it's just me, but I have a b!tch of a time seeing little dries like that, even on softer...

Re: Brown Trout Pics

You know it's hard out there for a fish:

Re: Wormy trout! Yuck!

Turns out they were very interested in this -- my local F&W tech reported it to the state fish pathologist, and the pathologist dispatched the tech to come pick up the frozen specimen. I'm told it...

Re: Wormy trout! Yuck!

Good idea re: state fish biologist. That hadn't occurred to me, but it probably should have. Thanks.

The good news on that front is, I froze both the innards and the carcass -- only because I...

Wormy trout! Yuck!

I don't keep very many fish, but I'm used to them being kind of nice to eat when I do.

However.

This evening, one of three nice holdover rainbows that came to the fly in a quick session on...

Re: One Fly Challenge

Do what you want, of course, but if it were me --

I'd say everybody gets to choose their fly. Duplicates are OK, maybe up to three? Has to be the effectively identical -- same pattern, same...

Re: Practice--it just may work!

That's great! Now, if I had a pond full of bluegills I could reach on my lunch break, I'd probably get myself fired within the month. Good thing I don't ...

Re: Move on or change up?

Yeah ... I knew the fish was there, because on the first drift it tried to eat the indicator ... LOL. Taking the big-and-bright-and-splashy cue, I tried a few streamers but no dice. After that, it...

Re: Move on or change up?

It's a great question ...

Naturally, the answer is "it depends."

If I'm prospecting a new area, a lot has to do with volume and depth. I tend to keep moving, but if I encounter a very fishy...

Very cool. Amazing how often pics aren't a possibility when you get a really exceptional catch.

Now, if it were me, I might give slightly less specific directions over the Internet to this...

Re: How long does it take a trout to start feeding again after feeling the hook?

I don't think I've ever enticed one right after I actually broke off a fly on it, but I've definitely had them come right around to whack a fly moments after a failed hookup. Then again, I've put...

Re: Pictures, please: what flies are you carrying lately?

Great pics, guys! PT, do you really carry all that out with you? Or do you load up a box or three of likelies for the day, place, and conditions? If you carry it all -- how do you do it? Chest...

Pictures, please: what flies are you carrying lately?

I doubt I'm alone in this -- I've gone through some big swings in the last few years, from carrying practically everything to going out with a real minimal flybox with a dozen or twenty flies.

Re: Integrity?

It seems like pretty bad practice to me. What the guides I know seem to want most is a repeat customer and/or the customer who spreads positive word of mouth, which pretty much means showing a...

Yuck, man. Sorry to hear it. I wade wet all the time in the summer, and I've been leeched pretty good a number of times. Never had the bites get badly infected, but they do itch like hell for...

Re: Rainbow Trout Pics

Had a fun afternoon on my neighborhood trout water. Water is low but quite cold, and the trout are starting to pack on the lbs for the approaching winter. Hooked 7 and landed all -- a brown and six...
