Re: "Tail Waters;" what is it?

huh... I always figured it was the opposite of headwaters. As in, if the headwaters are where the river forms, the tailwaters are where it ends.

Re: Published paper question

I can email you a PDF of the 1986 article, it was available online through my University's resources.

Re: Frustrating time casting my new rod

Yeah, I measured the ERN as soon as I got it and it came up at about 10.6... but I had already ordered the WF8F. I've got some WF9F on the way... it'll probably still give me fits.

Re: Frustrating time casting my new rod

I'm thinking I might take some lessons in the next couple of months.

I do know how to double haul (at least in principle), but I find getting the timing right difficult when I'm having trouble...

Frustrating time casting my new rod

Got out with my new Redington CPX 9'6" 8wt today. It was a frustrating experience.

I know it's a fast rod, but I just couldn't carry enough line in the air to get it to load properly with WF8F...

Re: Rod Weight and Price/Performance

I'm not really looking to pick anything up at the moment (unless I see a killer deal on a 2 or 3wt on the auction site... you know, maybe a little something smaller for the driftless), just...

Thus my comment that I'm still pretty new at this.

Rod Weight and Price/Performance

The long and short of this question is, all things being equal, would you pay more for a light weight rod or a heavier rod?

I'm still pretty new to this, but I find myself more willing to pony up...

Re: Moonshine

aged shine = whiskey (yes, prefer Scotch, so whiskey...not whisky)

Re: Moonshine

I've got a couple of friends with stills, and I've drank plenty of it. Can't say I much care for it until it's spent some time in wood.

Re: Echo Carbon 8' 6" 4 Weight

I saw those and the Ions on that site and am currently fighting the temptation. If I hadn't just bought that Redington CT 4wt I'd be all up on that. But I'm casting longing glances at that Ion 6wt...

Re: Highest value #4

I got my Redington CT from Fishwest for $83 shipped, looks like they still have some. Haven't cast it yet, but the preponderance of reviews are very positive.

Regluing Butt end

I was futzing around with my Powell this evening, seeing if my Okuma 7/8 fit on it, and as I was tightening the reel on it started pushing the butt end off. I was able to pull the butt end off...

Re: Making Sink Tips

These will mostly be used on my new Redington CPX 9'6" 8wt with WF8F line (at least that's the line at the moment). In certain situations I might use them on my 9' Powell SSL 6wt with WF6F. Both...

Making Sink Tips

I bought some cheap old stock Fenwick WF8S Fast Sinking (type III) line with the intention of cutting it up to make sink tips. I've got some braided loops, and am familiar with how to make my own...

Re: Rod weights and Common Cents

Because decent fly lines aren't cheap enough to just buy 'em and try 'em. Testing might not be perfect, but it's a better start than what the rod makers often give. Lines might be off a bit, but I...

Re: First Fly Rod?

The Sage Vantage and Flight are on clearance a lot of places at the moment, I've seen $150-170 on the Vantage and $200-225 on the Flight.

Re: First Fly Rod?

I'm pretty new at this myself, so grains of salt are in play here.

The first question is, do you want to spend $300 on just the rod, or the whole rig, because that obviously changes things.

Re: My budding gear hoarding problem...

I've done that many times. In the end I often just end up buying what I find a good deal on, or just pony up and buy something so I stop thinking about.

There's a principle in economics (I forget...

My budding gear hoarding problem...

Just clicked "Buy it Now" on a St Croix Pro Graphite 7' 5wt with a strung up Cabela's Prestige One Reel. Can't say I was really looking for a 7' 5wt, was actually just looking for a backup reel to...

Re: New with warranty card?

that's an interesting thread on the UK site. It seems like there are some subtle differences in the way warranties work. Namely that failure to register your warranty within a certain time frame...

Re: New with warranty card?

I've just recently bought two new Redington rods (a CPX and a CT both on closeout) and their warranty policy does ask for original proof of purchase.

I suppose on some level it does come down...

New with warranty card?

Still being relatively new to fly fishing, I've been noticing a curious phenomenon. I see many auction listings for items that are "New with blank warranty card," which are arguably not new (unused...
