Re: What is the best single piece of advice you would give beginners?

My best "single" piece of advice:

Remember that this is not a "single piece of advice" endeavour!

But without trying to be funny it would this; be prepared for a couple of years of...

Re: 4 pc VS. 2pc fly rods.

Try a 6mi hike in with a camping pack...the two piece is more than a "concieved" inconvenience. My 7' 3pc doesn't even fit where I want it to.

Orvis Brass Spotting Scope, anyone seen one?

I saw what looks to be a vintage Orvis Brass spotting scope at a local pawn shop. It is a straight line telescoping scope with a brass tripod; when it's collapsed its about 6" or so. Has anyone...

Re: Just got a new combo, did i get screwed?

You know...I think we've all done the "live and learn" method once or twice. I still think he got some good gear, but definitely good advice here...run your decisions past the guys here on the board...

Re: 4 pc VS. 2pc fly rods.

I'm currently taking donations for a Tacoma 4x4 doublecab with the TRD trim package! Until they all roll in I'm sticking with the Yaris and the 4pc rods!

Re: 4 pc VS. 2pc fly rods.

Even if 2 pc is better, MOST of us will never know the difference! From what I understand they are so close in comparison these days that only the best and most discerning casters will know the...

Re: Just got a new combo, did i get screwed?

Ross makes great reels, and I havn't heard too many complaints about any model that they make. There are several members that use these CLA's in large sizes and they all swear by them. The BVK is...

Re: Rainy Day Success

I've had PLENTY of good days in the rain! So long as it's not downpouring I keep fishing and catching just like normal...I guess the fish don't know when it's raining. Looks like a nice day out,...

Re: The Madison – A River of Many Faces

Yes, the Madison can be a bit befuddling!! I fished it three days while in Montana and had a decent day, a spectacular day, and a very terrible day! Though the terrible day was not my fault (at...

GARY, we are all so surpirsed...........:p

I voted 10-20, then I counted....as with my other books I grossly misunderestimicated! I counted my library en toto last time we moved and I was nearly...

Congrats on the impending retirement! Wish I could join you guys out there this summer, but baby boy #2 is on the way so no more Yellowstone treks for the next couple of years I'm afraid.

Re: Reel pairing for Sage One 5wt?

Oh, I see it now...I always forget that there are people out there on the coasts that fish for BIG stuff and routinely put backing in the water. I'm in Ohio, and salt fishing is the furthest thing...

Re: Reel pairing for Sage One 5wt?

Interesting take you have on this; I would think that drag inconsistency and slower line rate retrieval are more inhibitive to FISHING than uneven line winding. I do agree that a wide arbor design...

Re: Reel pairing for Sage One 5wt?

You're saying that you like to have a heavier reel on the ONE? I found it so light that I was going to use the Hatch 4 on something else?? I put a Litespeed 2 on it and it matches for me. When we...

Re: 4 Must have flys

Though I consider myself a minimalist, I always have at least 100 flies on me. I've just recently retired the fly fishing vest and I still have plenty of room for 200+ flies in the pocket of my...

Re: Should I be able to cast my 3wt as far as my 5wt?

?????? How is it even possible to "cast" with no rod? If I leave the fly line on the spool I can chuck it, box and all across the Rapahannock like George Washington, but that isn't casting. I...

Hmmm... I disagree a little at least. I've caught the same stocker twice in 5 minutes on the same fly....to me stockers seem pretty easy to catch; erratic in their behavior but more willing than...

I had fish attacking streamers last week where I was fishing. Browns, Bows, and a couple of brook trout on 4's and 2's with coneheads and rubber legs. Big rainbows, stockers, and I caught plenty of...
