Re: Belize is out, Driftless is in - any local advice?

I have fished with Tim a couple of times.
Tim used to guide in Alaska. He'll be all in if you want to swing flies.
Great guy, have had a couple of great days with him on the Brule.
He knows the...

Re: Belize is out, Driftless is in - any local advice?

Matt's a great guide, I have fished with a 2 of 3 Damian's guides and Matt.
One thing ya gotta say about Matt is knows how to make a lunch. I've been out with him and he's even cooked up hot...

Re: Belize is out, Driftless is in - any local advice?

Lake Michigan Tributaries might be slow to non existance that early. I'd go North, fish the Brule. There are a couple of guides up there that will do either way, swinging or drifting.
Try Dameon...

Re: can"t wait for this to start (no treble hooks)

I hate to you that I doubt this will have any effect.
I see lots of people snagging salmon using a fly rod and a single hook fly. Some do it intentionally and they are out there meat hunting.
Let...

Re: Ross CLA or Lamson Konic/Guru?

UGH!
I may not have had your vast years of experience but I have never had an issue on any of my Lamson reels. Konics and Litespeeds. I use them exclusively for Steelhead and Large Lake run fish. I...

Re: The Slow Demise of "Honor..."

My 2 cents FWIW
1) I'd be getting money up front on anyone except trusted few.
2) After I was stiffed I'd be naming names, warning others so as to minimize this type of behavior. If you let him...

Re: Guided trips and fishing spots

I don't think when you hire a guide your paying for "his honey holes". Your paying for his time (he is trying to make a living), the cost of his equipment (boat, gas, lunch, truck to haul boat,...

Guided trips and fishing spots

A question for the guides here. And please let me know if your a guide or not.
When your guiding a client to "your" fishing spots do you expect the client to end up fishing these spots on his own or...

Re: Laces vs BOA

I've got a set of Simms Rivertek with the boa laces.
This is my take on them

1) they are easier than laces to get on and tighten up, ready to go.
2) I have never had one fail in the field BUT...

Re: Why do some not catch fish?

When someone wades down the middle of the river the local gear fishermen call them "bears". As they look like bears walking around in the river looking for fish. I have been guilty of this myself. It...

Re: King of the River

I noticed the casting too. Instead of something like 10-2 hes doing 9-3.
Seems like his stroke is too long and he has no pause or dwell on the back cast to allow the line to straighten behind him....

Re: Wristwatches What You Wear And Why

I surprised at all the people that still wear watches.
I have never owned one or found the need for one.
If I don't need/use one why have one?
As someone else mention there are clocks on nearly...

Re: Steelhead Kicked My Butt

I've been at it for a while and its not easy.
I would caution you on heavy tippets and "putting the wood to them". if your using nymphs, I assume most of them are smallish on small hooks, if you...

Re: First time failure

I started fly fishing the same as you, chasing steelhead. had lots of help from others.
I'm just up the coast from you so I suspect most of this will apply to you.

1) flies to use. eggs, globugs,...

Re: Best rod for throwing articulated streamers?

I do the same type of thing. Lake Run Browns, over 30", over 20lbs. 7-8" streamers. Swinging or in most cases stripping the fly back in.

I use a 7 wt switch or a 9ft 8wt. either one is a min. as...

Re: Your thoughts on this canoe?

i have a 10ft v hull row boat i use on larger rivers. I have a small 6hp outboard. A trolling motor is only like 1/4-1/2hp for comparison. if you have any distance to go i'd go small outboard. its a...

Re: Steelhead Rod Weight Question

I fish the great lakes for steelhead primarily. have used a 8wt single hander and a 7 wt switch. my take is a 8wt either single hander or double is the way to go. here is why. we have lots of snags...

Re: Is a 6 wt switch rod equivalent to an 8 wt?

I do pretty much the same as you, steelhead and smallies on a 8wt. I got a 7wt. switch rod this spring. After battling some steelhead this fall its my experience that the 7wt doesn't have the back...
