Re: New Flats Fly Lines

I just picked up an 8 wt.

The one sided line spool it comes on outsmarted me and now I got to get all the coils out before I clean all the dust off it and spool it up onto a reel. It's laying all...

Re: Simple Acceleration Demonstration

Jack,

I was hoping some of the new guys would give it a try and wonder what happens to the wave it creates in the line.

Re: speed vs power

Lefty says to keep your ELBOW on the shelf. Lefty has his method of teaching and the FFF has it's method. There has been considerable friction over the years between the two. All this proves is that...

Re: Looking for suggestions, if there are any…..

I'd try a dark brown, or black tarpon toad in the day fished like a leach with a continuous up and down retrieve cross current , then go home and come back at midnight with a big ole time bomber...

Re: Oakley NanoClear Hydorphobic Cleaning Kit ?

Well, I'll reply to myself for the general opinion database. Self, what do think of that stuff ?

"I think it's great stuff and it didn't melt my new 580g's. I never did find out what the ph is...

Re: Back from the hospital

Best of luck JPG. It is really tough on people used to being outdoors and active coming down with something that limits activity - particularly fly fishing.

I'd expect there would be some good...

Simple Acceleration Demonstration

I've mentioned this before, but many new members have since joined the group. You have all heard that one of the keys to good casting is smoooth acceleration - not "slow" but "smoooth".

Try this...

Re: speed vs power

The way world-class professional distance casters do it during national and international tournaments is to quickly glance at their backcasts - though this is at least as much to assess the loop...

Oakley NanoClear Hydorphobic Cleaning Kit ?

Anybody use it - especially on Costa 580 G's? I bought a pair of 580 G's and the factory "hydrophobic coating" step either got skipped on my pair entirely or either is so far inferior to that on...

Re: Correct Way to Pack a Rod in its Tube?

Strange discussion - only because I'd never thought about it. My first good rods were bamboo and would only fit into the extremely tight tubes if well nested.

My TP, on the other hand, is...

Re: Knot help

Mullet,

There you have it. Since I don’t use perfection loops, Rip, S&S, Wolf and others are much better judges of them for what you are doing than me.

Like most people, I choose my knots for...

Re: Knot help

If I were using a loop to loop fly line to leader, I would use a surgeons loop. It will ride cockeyed but it is far from the fish, strong and will not come undone.

The only other loop I would...

Re: Knot help

I doubt they are breaking if you are using a butt of 30# test or something close.

They are probably loosening up while casting and then coming undone. The only way I can see them actually...

Out of curiosity, where are you putting the loop to loop connection?

Re: Night fishing

I caught brookies at night only once, Wolf, at a place ironically named Wolfe lake in New Brunswick Province, while eating brook trout at the campsite on the edge of the lake in pitch dark. I saw...

Re: Masked fishermen

I should probably wear some kind of protection too, but don't like greasy sunscreen, or long sleeve shirts either and have only ever worn those masks when skiing in really cold weather. I've got a...

Well, I hope it came in a nice box, Fred. At least that way you got an attractively wrapped disaster. :D

Re: New Flats Fly Lines

SWFL,

I'm thinking of picking up one of those Blue's in a 9 wt. I have the Clear Crystal in 11 and 12's. It seems that both the Crystals and the Rio lines shoot better when sticky with salt than...

Monello, from experience, I've learned that generosity in general is an admirable trait. But you may find that giving the entire planet and all the search engines in it access to the specific...

Re: Melbourne/Cocoa Beach FL, Guides?

No, but I'd go to Harry Goode's fly shop in Melbourne and inquire there. Ask if Bill is there. He works only part time. But the owner, who's always there, would certainly be able to recommend guides...

Re: Non-intended fish on the fly.

I'm curious, Jack. After you released the pelican did he fly off a little ways, then sit back down to do an extended gargling with salt water while a bunch of his buddies sat down around him to...

Re: Non-intended fish on the fly.

My biggest shock came about three years ago when out fishing with my buddy Big Al for tarpon from a borrowed skiff with a tiny center console. I'd thrown my Qbeam in the console before trailering ...
