Re: adding weight to nymphs/strike indicators

I wouldn't worry to much about the splash as long as you aren't repeatedly slapping the water and the splash is fairly small. A lot of the time I purposely aim my cast near overhanging trees,...

Re: First morning in Michigan.

To bad, it's a nice river to fish when you can get away from the crowds, good luck on the Manistee hopefully you guys get into some fish and the crowds die down with the end of the weekend.

Re: First morning in Michigan.

Go to the homestead dam and make your way down river. Lots of nice holes. runs and bends. Trails run pretty far down and the further you get from the dam the less people you see.

Re: Fly Shop Owners?

Yesterday I had that exact same thought while thinking about this thread and driving by one of the local gun shops. I've stopped in there twice to talk to their gunsmith and both times waisted 30+...

Re: Simms rivertek wading boots

I've been using the rivertek boots since the spring and am pretty happy with them. I screwed up my ankle a couple of times and need good ankle support. I've hiked several miles in them to fishing...

Re: Fly Shop Owners?

So far I've only had good experiences in the fly shops I've visited, at least until my wife saw how much I spent. I have experienced the same issues in other small specialty businesses. A lot of...

Re: Cemetery ponds, acceptable or no?

If it's a municipal cemetery and it's not posted with no fishing signs I say go for it. Just be respectful and take off your hat when the hearses go by.

One day with way too much time on my hands...

Re: Newbie to Michigan Salmon & Steelhead

If you haven't done so already sign up for the Michigan DNR weekly emailed fishing report. The one I got today says the Betsie is full of kings, the Manistee is still producing summer steelhead and...

Re: Newbie to Michigan Salmon & Steelhead

I know exactly what you mean. If we were still going to Michigan in October I'd invite you to meet up with us but our plans changed and now we're going to the PA Erie tribs. None of us have been...

Re: Newbie to Michigan Salmon & Steelhead

I've fished the Betsie and Platte the last two years in the fall, seeking but not really finding much steelhead. They do have a small fall run but most of the steelhead are running there in the...

Re: Schooling on Hooked Fish

My carp knowledge is pretty limited but I've had other species swarm a hooked fish. I always assumed they were attracted to the fighting fish thinking they were going to get in on a meal.

Re: Does everybody have that "one" fly that never seems to let you down?

Mine's an orange and brown cone head bugger with yellow rubber legs. I actually bought it the first time I ever bought flies but didn't use it for a year because I thought it looked ugly and like...

Re: New to me: Catch and Release info

Hah, when I took a casting class at Bass Pro we were casting into their pond and the guy next to me "caught" several bass on his bare fly line, at east until they decided to let go. Most of them...

Re: Aleka, reviews anyone?

I took advantage of a free sample pack of dry flies and nymphs a couple of years ago and have been very happy with them. I started tying my own flies though shortly afterwards otherwise I probably...

All fished out rant

In a previous post I had mentioned a small 4 acre lake adjacent to a larger 9 acre lake and park owned by our local park district. The lake was an old quarry that had never publicly been fished...

Re: Great Lakes salmon patterns?

All of my salmon hookups last year on the Betsie were on hot head buggers. I lost the 2 or 3 I started off with and ended up buying materials at the local fly shop to tie a bunch more the second or...
