Re: deer hunters--need gear advice

Nice Muley!

You are right, for most chances at good mule deer you need to be comfortable with 300+ yd shots. Personally, I'm not there and have only watched those deer a quarter mile away.

Re: easier than the tradition Blood Knot

Looks like a good knot, thanks Mike. I'll try it.

I like the double uni, as mentioned a few times already. I think it's good for making larger jumps in diameter than other knots because it's...

Re: deer hunters--need gear advice

My dad gave me his Win .32 Spc lever action a couple years ago. I haven't used it hunting yet, but I love the iron sights ... at 50 yds or less. I have one place I hunt that is heavily wooded and a...

Re: deer hunters--need gear advice

+3 on upgrading your scope. "Functional" is good but you don't have to break the bank for very nice, clear optics. Even the lowest end Leupold VX-1 will be like night and day, but a VX-2 at just a...

Re: Quality has a Price/Hairwing Flies

I've never bought flies from Jerry, but have been surprised at how little he charges.

If you are buying flies from Jerry, and send an extra bill as a tip, I guess he'd have to keep it! :wiggle:

Re: Inter cast marriage problem...WHAT?

I thought it was when a New England fly fisherman married a bait caster from Texas!

Re: Fly snagged on a bush...

Point at the snag and pull you line. A $2 fly is never, ever worth a broken rod. Do NOT use the tip of the rod to try to free a snagged fly. The tip of a rod is the most fragile part of the whole...

Inter cast marriage problem...WHAT?

Whoah...what the heck happened in the General Discussion forum? I hit the "new posts" tab to see what was going on and it seems like lots of marriage issues! Around the globe at the same time!

Re: Orvis Rocky Mountain Reels

No, it's one of the old ones, from the early 2000s. They are standard small arbor reels. I'm not sure when Orvis stopped making that model ...or when the new LA's started. At any rate, all of the...

Re: Orvis Rocky Mountain Reels

My die-cast Battenkill is still spooling line and reeling in fish almost 20 years later...and it's even taken some hard falls against big rocks!

Orvis Rocky Mountain Reels

I have one of these older offset disc reels that has always worked pretty well. They were made in England, but inexpensive reels even when new, they have some plastic inside, mainly the clicker and...

Re: Whats the worst cork you've ever seen?

TFO is notorious for using bad cork.

As for how much can be saved ... you can get really crappy cork rings for as little as $0.60, and the best rings are better than $2 now. So on a 6.5" grip, 13...

Re: sage fly rods

Trout Underground was a cool site, but he hung it up more than a year ago.

Sage is doing quite well at the moment, releasing multiple new rods each year for the past few.

Re: Not fly fishing:tile help

I remember the first time I saw a guy put his hand to a wet saw blade...freaked me out! They are loud, messy and do seem scary.

Man, you're prep job on that floor looks great, as said,...

Re: Watch for a 5 mile closure on the Bitterroot river.

Selfishly, this works to the advantage of the wading fisherman as there is not a single stretch of river from the forks all the way to Florence that can't be floated. That is about 80 miles of river....

Re: Not fly fishing:tile help

What honyuk and Iowa said...you definitely want a sound substrate, durarock or hardibacker.

What is the underlayment that the vinyl was glued to? Probably a particle board? That is on top of...

Re: 3,4,5,6 and 8wt lines for sale

What is the taper like on the Selective Trout and ST II lines? I could use a new 6 WT line but don't fish that rod much and your prices are right!

Thanks

Re: How's the Snowpack out there?

Yep, same in W Montana. After the warm, dry February and most of March it has cooled a lot and become very seasonable with snow and rain off and on since Easter. Much needed relief to not only stop...

Fishhawk Silk thread size?

I am curious if anyone knows the actual size of Fishhawk silk. They call it 3/0, which really tells us nothing. As fly tyers know, the "aught" rating of the threads is quite subjective and equivalent...

Re: Cork grip fitment

Did you make some progress?

My project has been super slow going, I thought I was ready, but found a couple bad wraps, peeled them off, and now i'll redo those and hope to get a good finish soon....

Re: Looking for suggestions, if there are any…..

Are there other hatches of bigger bugs later? Maybe March Browns or some Drake variety that present more and larger bugs that get stuck in the surface?

Otherwise, have you tried Shadow Casting?...

Re: Ridgeway State Park-Stock fish release method?

The aerial stocking is nuts! I wonder what the survival rate is, and I mean in the first 15 minutes.

This how they do it in Idaho, these fish are seriously confused!
