Re: Moving to Syracuse, where are the trout?

It's been a while since my post. I've been distracted, as it turns out.

The job is at Syracuse University.

Thank you all for your responses.
I'm moving in about 10 days, looking forward to...

Moving to Syracuse, where are the trout?

I've just accepted a job offer in Syracuse, and will be moving there at the beginning of August.

Where's the closest good trout fishing. I grew up in Rochester, and am somewhat familiar with the...

Re: New Rod Advice Needed

I would second the recommendation that you go with a Classic Trout in a 4wt configuration. 5wt is a bit much out there, though I do use it sometimes for tossing streamers. As far as 1 rod for the...

Re: Breaking off a fly.

I also use tippet rings and generally use an improved clinch on both ends, and have not had the same problem. I almost always break off at the fly end.

Re: Driftless Area fishing rig

Yeah, the wild parsnip can get over 6', in some areas of the driftless has choked out most of the plant life, and can give a pretty nasty rash with some truly funky raised pustules.

Re: Driftless Area fishing rig

You'll be fine with that.

The two rods I use most out here are 4wts, a 7'6" and 9'. I also frequently bring a 9' 5wt to throw streamers and strip them past the lunker structures.

I tend to do...

Re: New to the Sport, rigging up for Steelhead

Looks fine. As far as the full floating vs. sink tip it's mostly just a matter of personal preference. You can always add a sink tip to a floater. I currently have my 9wt rigged with a sink tip,...

Which line on my Cabela's Prime?

I'm thinking of heading out tomorrow or Wed to the driftless, and I'm thinking about bringing my Cabela's Prime 6' 3wt with me for its first action (along with a couple other rods). It's my first...

Re: What Did You Buy Today?

I accidentally ordered a closeout Sage Response 9'1" 6wt... that's the salt model, because I think I want the fighting butt (I assume the extra 1" is just the butt, no). I blame the backordered...

Re: What Did You Buy Today?

The seller in question contacted me almost immediately, offered to allow me to wait for the backorder (cited at about 3 weeks, but maybe more), asked if I'd accept a 7' 3wt in place of the 8'6" 5wt I...

Re: What Did You Buy Today?

Ordered a new Fenwick Aetos 8'6" 5wt off of eBay for $90 (more than 50% off retail) the same seller has it in a few other configurations available at the moment.

Re: Trout Unlimited Snootiness

It seems more than problematic that you would write off an entire organization based on your experience with a single individual.

Jerks are everywhere. Sometimes people are just having a bad...

Re: Patagonia wader closeouts

As I spend too much time looking at STP, I noticed that they have a full range of sizes again in the Rio Gallegos waders for quite a good price (as of 2/6):

Zip front here:
Patagonia Rio Gallegos...

Re: Scientific Anglers System 4 Reels

Out of curiosity... are they actually the same as CLA reels? By which I mean, do CLA spare spools work with the SA system 4?

Re: What Did You Buy Today?

I picked up my 6' 3wt Cabela's Prime from the local retail store.

This is my first fiberglass rod, and when I pulled it out of the shipping tube actually a bit concerned about how much at was...

I pretty much just use this for transporting rigged rods from spot to spot, rigged with some shock cord to keep everything in place. It unscrews in the middle for easier storage.

Re: Wading Boot Color

I'm surprised that this hasn't really come up yet.

But, have you tried these on with waders yet? If you're wet wading, obviously give it a shot. But don't expect that if these are boots you wear...

Re: Today! Cabelas Prime 50% off

Yeah, that 8wt just popped up today.

I just ordered the 3wt, figuring... well, I don't have a 3wt. I have a 2wt Redington CT, 3 4wts and 2 5wts, also 3 reels rigged with 4wt lines. And since it...

Re: 6'4" or 7'1" rod??

I'm not questioning the efficacy of the technique, nor the laws of physics. Merely the logistics of getting a rigged 9' rod streamside under all that overgrowth.

I use the B&A cast fairly...

Re: 6'4" or 7'1" rod??

I don't know, I'm not sure how a 9' rod makes fishing those tiny streams under canopies of trees an easier. You still have to get that rod through the trees, and under the boughs to make bow and...

Re: What Did You Buy Today?

Simms Rivertek 2 Boa boots, from my local fly shop, to replace my iffy Dan Bailey's.

I went in last week with the intention of buying some G3s, found out that they don't make them in my size (size...

Re: Today! Cabelas Prime 50% off

I'm thinking about picking one of these up. Those of you that are fishing them, how are lining them, true to rating, up, down?
