Re: where the big trout live

Everyone's already said what needs to be said here, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents anyway.

My experience with catching large rainbows is limited, but big fish regardless of species have...

Re: where the big trout live

It might be helpful to know what species you're targeting, and what are we considering as 'big.' In AZ, anything bigger than 18" is big, while in AK, that same fish is probably a minnow.

Re: Reel Options & Opinions for Winston GVX 480-4

Let me begin by saying that I was until recently of the opinion that balancing your rod/reel was unnecessary. And I still believe that in the middle range of rods and reels it's not much of a...

Re: How to get started?

For the record, when I started tying I bought a kit. And then about a month later a buddy gifted me a kit, and I learned to tie on those kits for the first 2 years. So understand that I am not...

Questions about a Bamboo Rod

Okay, so I know a guy that is considering selling this rod:

Heddon Bamboo flyrod " Bill Stanley's favorite" From the 1950's

#20 -9' 2 1/2F HC-H- or D ( Basically 5-6 weight)
3 Piece rod with...

Re: How to get started?

You should do a search on this, as I believe there are several threads on this subject. However, your basic needs are as follows:

A book, DVD or some reference material on how to tie. Others...

Re: Wolly Buggers?

I use red as an 'attractor' color. for example, red head, white tail or vice versa. Red and black is another good combo.

White hackle is actually a pretty good idea. A dark brown or rust...

Re: rigging

Zonker may not be exactly the right name. It's a minnow pattern, using a length of bunny strip, commonly called a zonker strip. fished similar to a deceiver minnow, but has more 'action.'

Re: rigging

It depends on the pattern of the fly. If you're fishing streamers/buggers/zonkers etc., then go right ahead. However, I don't think it will work with small dries.

Re: Repair or discard?

I believe Grand has 7 ft. of front taper.

And to be honest, I bet I can 'make do' with this line if I cut it. It's not like I'm casting for extreme precision 90% of the time. But I figured I...

Repair or discard?

Okay, here's the deal:

Last weekend, I somehow cut my nearly three year-old Rio Grand line about 4.3 feet from the tip down to the core. The core appears to be intact, and the rest of the line is...

Re: need new 3wt line, what to get

I'm not an expert, but this exact thing has happened to me at least 4 times in the last three years, so I'll tell you what I've done for this situation.

I take an old tapered leader, something...

Re: acceptable distance for 9' 5 wt.

I'm sure that this has bedn said at least once, but here goes.

If you can cast to your target, that's far enough.

That said, you should be ablre to cast at least 50 ft. without couble hauling. ...

Re: What is wrong with my roll cast?

As I just learned recently how to consistently and successfully execute roll casts, you may take this advice with a grain of salt . . .

First, a few words about the videos. They are excellent,...

Re: Need help getting set up

Chances are high that the guys at Cabela's or BPS in the fly shop will know what kind/how much backing to put on your reel, what kind of lines are popular for your fishing, leaders to use, etc.

Re: newbi

Welcome. You can't go wrong with the uni. If you feel comfortable tying it, keep on using it for fly fishing. I do. In the last four years I've learned to tie most of the other FF knots, but I...

Re: Nymph fishing without indicators

I think I might find out the answer for you this weekend. I'm heading to a mecca of 'bobber' flyfishing this weekend with the intent of trying to fish it without using a bobber. The place is Lee's...

Re: New Here and Need Some Line Help

I can only speak somewhat intelligently on the 3 wt. and the 5 wt. lines and where to get them. Airflo Ridgeline is good true weight line that casts/roll casts and mends well and is fairly limp. ...

Re: Frustrating time casting my new rod

I didn't read all the posts here, but here's my two cents just the same.

I had a Redington CPX 9 ft. 5 wt., which was a cannon. But in order to feel it load I ended up having to overline it with...
