Can you use braid fishing line for backing

Was wondering if I could use braided fishing line or anything else with a smaller diameter than standard nylon backing as this would allow me to get more backing on a reel.

Just put the Hardy CLS 5000 on my Greys XF2 9foot 5w. I put on line and backing and th balance point is exactly at halfway of the cork grip. I can live with a but heavy rod but it does balance...

I just bought the CLS as I planned on lining it for a few rods. I put 8w wf f on it with 125 yard backing and thought this is going to be heavy for my 5w I'm going to buy. Talked to a few though...

Ya I got sold on the Hardy feel of the drag and the quality as well as the interchangeable cartilages. The Greys rod well I liked it but was a little unwilling to spend too much until I get back...
