Re: Reel Love; the Fly Reel Picture Thread

Posted these to another thread, but thought I'd share a side by side comparison of a Hatch Finatic 3 Plus and Ross F1 #3. Enjoy! :D

Re: Reel Balance - An Objective Truth or Personal Prefernce?

From what I'm reading, it seems that several of you also prefer to have the rod balance when placed over your index finger near the tip of the group (give or take an inch in location I assume). This...

I completely understand! It's hard to give up a well kept secret. And thanks for the other tips!

Re: Deciding on a New 4wt Rod

Perhaps the bump in price is meaningful to you, but I would consider finding a used Winston biix or biit. They can be found in the $300 range and are great for smaller rod weights.

Re: Brown Trout Pics

Great picture of the fish in the water! Browns are my favorite!

Reel Balance - An Objective Truth or Personal Prefernce?

This is an invitation for forum members to discuss their notion of "balance" for their rods and reels. Having just purchased a Ross F1 #3, and also owning a Hatch Finatic 3 Plus, I'm acutely aware...

Re: Brook Trout Pictures

If you don't mind sharing (and I don't blame you if do), what river in Southeastern Idaho has brookies?

Re: Is 2wt too light for bream and small bass?

I use a medium action 6.5' 3wt for a lot of trout fishing and think it is a blast! I say go for it. It makes a mediocre fish seem like a trophy.

Re: Favorite number of rod pieces?

Has to be 4, which is small enough to pack and stow away, but can also be dissembled in the middle for an easy 2-piece when on the water. I don't like odd numbers because it they don't make a...

Re: Eat that fish, or release it?

I keep and eat one fish a year, to remind myself why I don't keep and eat more fish!

Re: Ross F1 dilemma

While I do like the new reel, I completely agree that the old logo should have stayed. I still wear my old RR hat, but wouldn't consider wearing a hat with that new mess-of-a-logo.

Re: Line suggestion for Sage Z Axis 590-4

I have the SA GPX on a fast action 9' 5wt rod and am not nearly as impressed with it as the salesperson seemed to be. I have the Rio Grande line on a fast action 9' 6wt and really like it. It loads...

Re: Ross F1 dilemma

You certainly ended up with a fine reel. I agree that the price of the F1 (and the Hatch for that matter) is prohibitive to many cost-conscious consumers. I managed to get mine for a significant...

Re: 6wt or 7wt

Fishing outfits are kind of like cars. You should buy what will work 90% of the time. From what you've described, a 6wt would be more than sufficient for most 90% of the fishing you will do and is...

Re: help a newb pick a couple of outfits

I suppose I have a different approach. I would find a used, high-end rod on eBay and give it a whirl. For $200-$300 you can get a very nice Winston, Sage or Scott rod. A lot of fishermen think the...

Re: Abel Trout or Creek?

I recall Abel being the "holy grail" of fishing reels when I began fly fishing 20 years ago. With all of the new technology over that span, I'm amazed to see that the sentiment hasn't significantly...

Re: Ross F1 dilemma

After all of my rambling, I decided to take a chance on the Ross F1 #3 in guide finish (which was made much easier with the good discount I received). I was going to purchase another Hatch Finatic,...

Re: Ross F1 dilemma

I stopped at the largest, most reputable fly shop in my area. They carry Ross, Hatch, Nautilus, Lamson, etc. When I asked the long-time salesman if they carried the F1, he looked at me as if I was...

Re: Ross F1 dilemma

I'm a little surprised that they hasn't lowered the F1's price given its poor sales. I even called a large, well-known fly shop that sell's the F1 and the staff was very reluctant to push the F1 due...

Re: Ross F1 dilemma

I just read the challenge, and the F1 was rated relatively low -- the main complaint being the strength of the drag. I realize that any drag is likely sufficient for trout fishing, but if you are...

Re: Abel or Hatch????

I have a Hatch 3+ that I use for a 9' 5wt Scott S3. Honestly, I wish it were heavier on occasion. So I guess I don't fit into the ultra light / perfectly balanced camps. As for performance, the...

Re: Ross F1 dilemma

I have a Scott S4 in a 6wt and had the same thoughts regarding the guide finish. But as others are pointing out, it seems that the although the F1 is a nice reel, a similarly priced Hatch or Abel is...
