Re: Carp Numbers in MA

There are largemouth, bluegill, and yellow perch in Leverett Pond, which is basically the headwaters of the Muddy River. I imagine they make their way between there and the Charles occasionally.

Re: Rods You Just Can't Part With

I'll never be able to let go the Garcia Conolon 8' 6/7wt glass rod that I learned on, but I did recondition it to lose the thick layer of paint and to have the correct number of guides installed....

Re: 9' 4wt suggestions?

If you really want a new reel to go with your new rod, then I would suggest looking into an 8'6" 4wt St. Croix Legend Elite.

If you can repurpose a reel you already own, then things open up to...

Re: Countefeit Sage FYI

I had the exact same experience when reading this thread. My three Sage rods are all built from blanks, so no SNs. Luckily, I have no inclination towards ever selling them as they are fantastic...

Re: Bozeman reels

PSA: "500 large" is $500,000.

Still, I see your point, missin44.

Re: 4wt floating line for around 50 bucks

One option that's right at your $50 price point is the Hook & Hackle "Rise" line.

Re: Reel for Redington CT

For a budget reel at line weights where the drag is not super important, I think it's hard to beat the LL Bean Pocket Water reel, especially when they're offering 10% off (and even more so if one has...

Re: Opinions on weights

Since you're going to ask the guys/gals at the local shops and you asked for opinions in this thread, I don't feel bad throwing my two cents in:

Get an 8' or 8'6" 4wt.

You'll love it.

Re: Prime

The five weight does sound like a fun lightweight carp chaser.

Re: A reel that sings

You can get an Abel Creek from MRFC for just around $200. It's not a disk drag, but that reel sounds pretty nice with a fish running on it.

Re: Opinion on chinese or korean built rods?

Three other companies who offer MIUSA rods at less than an ultra-premium price:

St. Croix, Beaverkill Rod Company, and South Fork Rod Company.

Re: Budget 3wt

That is a great rod and I love mine paired with a Ross Rhythm 0, but it's unlikely his local shop has one in stock.

I've never cast a CT, but my understanding is that it's hard to beat at the...

Re: 2wt Reel Advice

I think matching a rod brand with a reel brand makes sense, in an OCD sort of way. The BVK0 will do the job and you'll enjoy looking at it, so what's not to like?

Re: Ross Evolution 0 Great reel!!

That's a more ported version of the Rhythm, right? I have a Rhythm 0 that I love on my 7'6" ZXL 3wt. Definitely gets a thumbs up.

Re: Wetfly nitrogen 7-8wt

I don't know about the quality of this particular reel, but it can be purchased at Sierra Trading Post (with a coupon code) for less than the price quoted in your post. Today's coupon (extra 35% off)...

Re: What is your favorite Brand and model fly Rod?

I don't have a favorite brand. I own rods made by Sage, Winston, Garcia Conolon, St. Croix, Tom Morgan Rodsmiths, Batson, Orvis, Dan Craft, Angler's Workshop, South Fork Rod Company, Cabelas, LL...

Re: Hardy Zenith 6 wt. or TFO BVK 7 wt.?

Great question! The next question is if a BVK 7wt will lay down #20 dry flies effectively?

The answer to both questions is probably "no" but the OP wants one rod to do both, and he gives us a...

Re: NRX LP or standard NRX

That's high praise in my book. I've flip flopped on whether I would go out of my way to try to cast a Nexus. I'm back to flipped now, or is it flopped? Either way, I'm intrigued.

Re: Hardy Zenith 6 wt. or TFO BVK 7 wt.?

I think you're selling the BVK short with the Yugo analogy, but I would also choose the Zenith 6 over the BVK 7. My reasoning is that the Zenith series is that good, not that the BVK is bad.

Re: Any made in the US companies match Orvis' warranty??

Nice. The internet, circa 1998, was pretty great. It's better now in some ways but worse in a lot of ways, too.

Taking your time is the key. It's not hard, as long as you don't try to rush it.

Re: Looking back.... How green were you?

When I started, I was a college student in Mississippi who found his great uncle's Garcia Conolon fiberglass fly rod in my parents' attic. I bought a Martin 61 for six bucks at Wal-Mart and a couple...
