Re: Scandi or Skagit?

I also love my Rage head, but if it's not too windy, and I want to fish dry flies I prefer a Scandi head.

Re: Dyna-King Barracuda

I've tied flies down to size 20 on the regular jaws with no problems.

Re: Disadvantage of side arm casting?

Jim,

Great link to the advantages of the vertical and non-vertical cast.

Re: Disadvantage of side arm casting?

I don't know, I mean there have been some great sidearm pitchers in baseball, including, I think, Walter Johnson, so if it works for you, it works.

Having said that, one problem I see with sidearm...

Re: Stiff wrist/Flex wrist

By breaking the wrist halfway -as if we're hammering a nail - at the very end of the forward cast, we won't lower the rod tip from the target line.

Re: The cast...specifically the last 2 seconds!

I'm not sure what you mean by "a timing issue." I'd like to hear more about it. To me, if a caster's timing is off, then the cast is underpowered.

Re: The cast...specifically the last 2 seconds!

P.S. You can also grab the fly line with your fingers just before the leader unrolls.

Re: The cast...specifically the last 2 seconds!

To get back to your original question: If your leader is not turning over your fly cast is probably underpowered. There can be many reasons for this, and it is therefore impossible to diagnose your...

Re: Stiff wrist/Flex wrist

During my forward cast I break my wrist halfway - as if I'm hammering a nail - then I abruptly stop the fly rod. During my back cast I do not break my wrist.

If high-gloss fly rods spook trout then why ...

I'm reading The Trout and the Fly, a terrific book. (I posted a link below.) In the book the authors make the case that high-gloss fly rods often reflect sunlight and spook trout.

If that's the...

Re: Can't afford a Sage . . recommendations?

Maybe it's me then. I've been fishing for quite some time and, when it comes to casting, I can't tell the difference between high-end fly rods - I have about seven of them - and mid-priced ones.

Re: Looking for Fly Tying Vise

Are you tying saltwater flies? If so, make sure the vise you buy can handle big hooks. (The Dyna Kings can.)

Also, I'd get a true rotary vise. I know many tiers don't use one, but I find that when...

Re: Dyna King Trekker. Hook slipping.

I've tied size 20 on my Trekker. No problem. For what size flies should I get the midge jaws?

Re: Dyna King Trekker. Hook slipping.

Where are you mounting the hook in the jaws? I mount small -up to size 20 - thin hooks in the tip of the jaws, not in the notches. You might have to tighten the jaws a bit.

Re: DT or WF for my 2wt

For trout fishing I now prefer a DT line. They are so much easier to mend.

Re: False cast and distance on the release

Some good advice here.

I'd like to add that some fly lines - long belly ones and double taper - allow an angler to carry more line (often referred to as overhang) when false casting.

One...

Re: The basics of a double haul

If I understand your problem, you might be ending your downward haul too late - after you stop the fly rod. Because your line hand is too far down, you can't possibly give back line unless you do it...

Re: Leader Question

I hope this doesn't hijack the thread. An angler told me he doesn't use furled leaders because when they are lifted off the water they create a lot of water spray.

Is this true?

Re: Selectivity - why and how do trout become selective feeders

Great post. Thanks so much, Silver Creek.

Here's something that I'm curious about: When it comes to emergers do trout also feed selectively?

One of the reasons I ask this is because there is an...
