Re: Getting the most out of CDC (stretching?)

When I do use CDC, which isn't all that often, I'm usually tying flies that require most or all the usable fibers. Long time since I tied CDC comparaduns, so I can't quite remember what I did with...

If you want to narrow the shank/gap ratio, look at the Daiichi 1560.

Re: Everyone says good tools

It sounds like you might be a good candidate for fly tying classes. Based on your location, you should have a good offering within an hour's drive.

As for tools, you'll gain a lot by handling...

Re: Wanted: Norvise system

If you haven't yet reached for the drill...

The holes on the Norvise board are 14" center-to-center, which I've found to be a practical distance. It's far enough apart to keep my hand from...

Re: Bargain hunters STP/Backcountry question?

My suggestion: If you see a discounted item that you really want, don't wait too long in the hopes of saving a few dollars more.

Re: I got new tying stuff!!!!!!!

Just use scissors or a razor blade. A dubbing rake is useful when you want to pull the underfur out without getting the guard hair. For hare's ear dubbing, you want all the guard hair in the mix.

Rods you regret NOT buying

J Kennedy Fisher 8' #5 graphite

Had a rep's demo rod for the day. Just a well crafted rod with a particularly agreeable taper. I was a bit too practical at the moment and figured I'd pick one up...

Re: Rods you now regret selling...

Not true, at least not in my case. I may have other regrets, but I've yet to sell a rod I really like.

Re: Short rods for big flies?

For clarity...
Short rods have less leverage, not more. The rod is the lever, the angler's hand is the fulcrum, and the gamefish creates the effort upon the lever. Reducing rod length reduces...

Re: Orvis Fly Rod Sale - What's Up?

Ooops,...that did sound like something I pulled out of my casserole.

I thought it was on this board but was evidently another. Someone inquired @ Orvis about the discount and was informed some...

It's been stated that Orvis is making changes to the Superfine graphite line for 2015.

Re: Thomas & Thomas "Special Dry Fly" Information

Age? My best guess is about 1987 +/- 5yrs
IIRC, T&T offered a small selection of rods named "Special Dry Fly" that varied slightly in length and line weight in the very late 70s. I believe these...

Re: Best reel for a classic trout Rod?

Might be interesting if you want a simple, traditional design. Similar appearance to Abel TR series.

Re: G.Loomis to Sage?

I had no idea you should own rods from only one mfr. I've been doing it wrong all along.

Re: Threading the hook: Top or Bottom?

With the exception of a handful of knots that require threading through a particular side (e.g., Turle Knot) due to being tightened on the shank, I can't see any functional reason to favor one side...

Shimano facsimile is "Ultegra," just like the road cycling series.

OP, if no spare spools surface, you might keep an eye out for Galvan Standard reels on the previously enjoyed market. Very...

Re: Echo Fly Rod Warranty

I'd contact Echo and tell them that I damaged a guide and would like to know the cost of repair. At least then I'd know if it's worth pursuing at that end. Echo's "repair" may be direct replacement...

Re: What Size Fly Line ??

Most freshwater reel capacities are given with 20# dacron or Micron specified. It's just a reference, but that doesn't mean you need to use 20#. I gradually moved to 30# Micron on most reels, even...

Re: What Size Fly Line ??

Had a moment to check some measurements on a Medalist. The 1495 spool measurements are:
diameter = 3"
internal width = 13/16"
external width = 15/16"

Sounds like your copy equates to the 1495. ...

Re: Cortland Classic 444 Whisper Double Taper

Per the info I have, the front taper on the Whisper DT is 25% longer than the front taper on a classic "peach" 444 DT.

The WF version has a front taper that is about 3x that of the "peach" WF. ...

Re: What Size Fly Line ??

Don't have my Pfluegers handy to measure at the moment, but the spool diameter given (not reel diameter) is probably a match for the Medalist 1495; however, I think the width is closer to a full inch...

Re: A Bunch of Fly Lines Question

444 was a premium line for many years. The classic 444 floater is known as the "peach" due to its color. Still popular with a segment of anglers for its supple nature and value.

Cortland later...
