Re: Need Some Fishing Destinations in Alaska for my Summer Trip

Good advice from Doug, that book is great. You also need a current Milepost.
For someplace that isn't crowded, think about the Prince of Wales island. It is noted for rain, bears, and fish. ...

Re: Pedestal base

It is live oak, about 50% heavier than white or red oak. It is used a lot for the futtocks (curved frames) in large wooden boats.
I cut a piece 1 1/2 x 6 x 12" and it weighs just over 4 pounds,...

Re: Pedestal base

Pedestal base

I have a clamp vise and was thinking of making a pedestal for it. It seems that base weight and area are the two biggest factors. I have some very dense wood (old live oak) to experiment with. ...

Re: 9' 8-weight versus 11' 8-weight (switch)?

With a two handed rod, you can move the upper hand (fulcrum) to the top end of the cork and leave your bottom hand at the end of the butt. The longer that distance it, the more leverage you have...

Re: Advice on Newfoundland?

I head that the door 4 ft above grade was to get out in case of heavy snow.

It is certainly possible to travel in Newfoundland a long time before you see one. We drove all around the country and...

Re: Advice on Newfoundland?

Even though I don't like some of the fishing regulations there, I really like the island and the people. They will go out of their way to help you, and I enjoyed talking to every one I met.
We...

Re: Advice on Newfoundland?

Another surprise was: "Beyond 800 meters of a provincial highway, non-residents may not fish unless accompanied by a licensed guide or a direct relative who is a resident of the province."

I...

Unhappy Re: Advice on Newfoundland?

I drove thru a lot of Labrador and Newfoundland in 2010. As a non-resident, I found out that I could not stop and fish in a stream if it had salmon unless I had a guide.
Since I love to stop along...

Re: My budding gear hoarding problem...

Last year, I bought a switch rod and reel, a conventional (revolving spool) salt water rod and reel, and a spinning salt water rod and reel. Biggest year so far - no plans to top it this year. 31...

Re: BEST/WORST Hookups...

Talked to an ER nurse in Newport, RI. A guy came in with a big plug hanging on a treble hook just under his eye. He had been in a blitz and the plug came out of the striper under a lot of pressure...

Re: ways to make it affordable--all your tips, strategies, and methods

If you are old enough - a lifetime pass to the National Parks cost $10. It gets you and everyone else in your vehicle in for free, and camping is half price. It also is good for Forest Service, and...

Re: Left-Handed casting

As Dan said, "I'll bet you could tape the top half of your arm down and not really hurt your cast much." with a two handed rod.

I will have to wade out in the snow and try that. I have a bad...

Re: Stripping baskets

I am putting one together and am making spikes from some medium sized wire nuts. With a hot glue gun, it is easy to fasten them. Haven't tried it out yet.

G. Loomis GL 6-7-8 Reel

I picked up this used reel at a Healing Waters fundraiser and I really like it.

Had it on an 8 weight and got some cohos last summer in Alaska. Is this reel best for 6, 7, or 8 fly line or all...
