Re: Are rodmakers changing their product lines a little too often?

I'm with James. As I look at my 20 or so (too many) rods, there's only one rod for which I paid full retail. The rest were discontinued closeout rods.

I know the new rods represent cutting...

Re: Bitterroot, "Epic MT" video

That's awesome, having lived and fished (including twice on the Bitterroot with a native Missoulian) in Montana for 4 years, it brought me back.

Dean, I found myself laughing the whole way...

Re: 5wt??

As I look at my quiver (way too many rods), I realize I fish a 4wt whenever I can, a 6wt when I must. Just for reference, I have ten 4wts, three 5wts, and two 6wts.

If I started over, I would...

Re: Abel Creek Discontinued?

I thought the same thing. In fact, a couple of years ago I think Abel did plan to discontinue the Trout but due to the outcry, they kept it. Now they are discontinuing the Creek even though it...

Re: Abel Creek Discontinued?

Thanks guys, I called Stillwater Outfitters, who is one of the biggest Abel dealers in the US and they indicated the Creek was being discontinued. Abel recently bought Ross, and the shop thought...

Abel Creek Discontinued?

I just went to the Abel website looking for Creek line capacities and the Creek isn't listed in their current lineup. Has the Creek been discontinued?

Re: is a winston rod good?

I too own several Winstons. I would contact Winston (go to winstonrods.com), tell the shop what you have and get their thoughts on repairs. They will also be able to give recommendations for...

Re: New Mexico Fly Fishing

Thanks everyone for the replies. If the move does happen, we could live in either Albuquerque or Sante Fe. The bride said schools would be the deciding factor between the two but if it's a toss-up,...

New Mexico Fly Fishing

I will be moving for work in the next 6 months and one of the potential landing spots is New Mexico. Having only flown through the airport in Albuquerque, I know nothing of the fishing there other...

Re: 4 Wt BIIIx and BIIt for Missoula? (Rock Creek)

When I lived in Montana, I fished Rock Creek several times and always with a 4 weight but never with streamers.

Others who fish it regularly will chime in and their mileage may vary. I agree with...

Re: The quintessential 8ft 4 wt?

I'll add another plug for the TMF. I have always used it when fishing drys but more capable folks then me have done light nymphing with it as well. If I had to start all over building a limited...

Re: Changable sole boots

Another vote for the Korkers here. I have several pairs, felt and the interchangeable soles, great boots and I love the BOA lacing system

Re: all around trout rod

I have the Winston rods you listed with the exception of the 690 BIIX (wish I did). If I had to keep just two, it would probably be the 586 IM6 (for everything from dries to light nymphing) and the...

Re: How many fish will I loose when......

I always use barbless (I de-barb if tying).

When I used a net with a nylon basket, the hooks (even ones with the barb mashed down) always seemed to get hung up in the webbing (isn't it amazing how...

Re: Winston III LS

Jackster is right on. As a fly-fisher, you may "date" many rods (some seemingly perfect for different phases of your life), you may "date" one your buddies love but which does nothing for you, you...

Re: MT Yellowstone and Bears

Go fish Yellowstone
Get bear spray
Use common sense
If you encounter a charging bear, use the spray on the bear or your faster friend
Run to the next great fishing spot

I've used the trade-up program at Anglers Habitat several times and it's been great, same experience as mt_flyfisher. Describe the gear to Wayne or staff over the phone, get a quote, send or drop...

Re: I need a back-up rod. Or do I?

I have never-fished backups of my favorite 2 rods (probably completely unnecessary) and I always bring a back-up which is one of those rods which does well with both drys and nymphs. My biggest...

Re: Winston: anyone recognise this model?

Rich's (fishiowa) post got me thinking. My 8' three wt, three piece WT is on the other coast but I decided to measure my Winston 8'6" 5 wt WT. Each section measured 34 7/8 inches for a total of 8'8...

Re: Knowing what you know now......

mtbusman,

I wish I had bought a BIIX 9' 6wt when they were on clearance. I've heard they're a great rod,

Re: Knowing what you know now......

I have moved 6 times in the last 10 years which impacts the arsenal. That said, if I were to start over, I would have the following:

4 weights: 2-3 in lengths of 7' - 8'6" for dries/spring...

Re: Will Abel Creek 1 LA hold a WF 4wt line?

I recently purchased an Abel Creek 1 LA and put an SA Textured Trout WF line on it. I could comfortably get 25 feet of 20# backing on it. I used that reel on my shorter 4 weights.
