what rod weight

I'd say search YouTube. There are a few videos on it. Basically though, you put one end of the blank on the table and the other you cradle in your palm. You then slowly turn the blank while putting...

Re: what rod weight

Guides on a fly rod go on the belly, just like a spin rod. Finding the spine is pretty easy. There are lots of companies making affordable blanks out there. Just do a quick google search of the Rod...

what rod weight

Riptide, I certainly agree you can get better components and build it yourself. I've built three rods now an have done just that, all on a homemade jig like you show.

My only point with the...

Re: Your Fly rod brand of choice

I've always been a fan of TFO rods. Mainly because I'm a father of 4 and my budget is small. The quality to cost ratio for their offerings is very high. And I know if I break it, I can get it...

Re: Top Water Bassing

Very nice! What kind of bass are these? I've not seen anything like them. Where are you located?

Re: what rod weight

Have you ever built a Rod before flyin fool? I was just considering building a mangrove, but part of what I love about the one I have is the grip and hardware. If I do get another, it'll be a factory...

I love the Mangrove. I personally think it's a best of both worlds, do it all rod.

Re: what rod weight

The pro II is gonna be way softer than the TiCrX. The TiCrX is pretty stiff. But, if you're slinging big stuff and need distance, stiff isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Re: The Cost of Trout Fishing

I'm not debating the merits of catch and release vs catch and keep for any individuals preferences, but I think that whatever we do, we need to realize that fishing is blood sport. If you're not ok...

Re: what rod weight

If it were me, I'd go with a 9. If you're into a striper, an 8 could really be undergunned. A 10 would probably be better. I've been told by some really knowledgable folks that a 9 is a much more...

Re: 3wt short stick

I've been debating building a SFRC 2wt. I've read that the Classic series are as soft/slow as it gets. I think it'd be a blast as a small stream brookie rod, or to abuse some bluegill on.

VERY cool. I've not seen his work in person, but have seen a lot of pictures. Looks like he really knows his stuff. I'm sure you'll be extremely happy.

Re: 3wt short stick

I will add, I cannot afford the rods I mentioned either. Of all the rods I own, the Steffen I built is by far the most expensive rod I own at around $300 (it also happens to be the nicest 4wt I've...

Re: 3wt short stick

Hey Ditz, sorry if I came across as over the top. It wasn't intended to be so acerbic, but I see how it came out like that. The FL is a fun rod. My only point was that it's really apples to oranges...

Re: Are We Over-Thinking/Over-Engineering?

I think there's an appeal in both directions. Some want to keep things as simple as possible and are thus drawn to Tenkara. Others like complexity and are fishing for bluegills with a 4wt Helios 2,...

Re: 3wt short stick

Sorry ditz, but if you like an eagle claw over a Steffen or other quality glass, you've probably been dropped on your head as a child. I fished a Featherlight 7' 5/6 a ton last summer and while it's...

Re: 3wt short stick

4 months sounds about right. I ordered my blank in September and it arrived at the very end of January. If you don't mind buying used, I would recommend joining Fiberglass Fly Rodder's forum and...

Re: Thoughts on Dries

I like parachutes simply because I find them a bit easier to see on the water. I'm also almost always fishing a dry dropper, and it seems that a smaller parachute fly will suspend a nymph better than...

Re: Need advice on a new rod

I have the 9' 4wt CT. It can be a little tip heavy with too light a reel, but it's a very good all around trout rod.
