Re: Sage Salt Fly Rod Review

I'm with Lazzaro - especially when it comes to rods 10wt and up. The rod lightness thing that everyone wants, and the manufacturers push should end at a 7 wt. , possibly 8 wt.

In the heavy rods....

Re: Short rods for big flies?

Well, it just goes to show that practices started at multinational corporate/government levels eventually work their way down one way or the other. Sad. But sadder yet that few people take the time...

Re: Short rods for big flies?

Short vs long rods translates, in part to the resistance of each to bending. So a very long soft rod, once accelerating, may well be closer to the caster's casting hand than a short rod that's...

Re: Abel's forthcoming Sealed Drag Reel

I'll go along with that Fred, for sure. Especially considering how small the reels are like NC says below.

I can't imagine what they are thinking. Pawl drags are all I've ever used in those...

Re: Sinking Lines use weighted flies or not?

Joni, I just did a search for them since I never heard of them before.

The article I just read said that the Europeans found that they imitated bait fish (as well as nymphs floating to the top...

Re: Sinking Lines use weighted flies or not?

Good point, Fred - especially when fishing nymphs and other flies you want close to the bottom.

But if you are fishing streamers - especially in slow moving waters - that are supposed to imitate...

Re: Sinking Lines use weighted flies or not?

I'll second that. Use whatever you think will work and don't get bottled in by convention.

I started using a very large spun deer hair fly on a sink tip line at night for large tarpon. It is...

Re: Casting Lessons

There is certainly an overlap between guides and casting instructors - espceially if you hire a guide through a fly shop, or if you hire a guide who only guides fly fishermen.

If you look at...

Re: Casting Lessons

I would stick with the original suggestion. Many guides and other fly fishermen with years of experience fly fishing are simply not any good at teaching someone else how to do it.

Re: Short rods for big flies?

I would agree with Pete that the main reason is for bass tournamens. Sage, TFO and Ross all make "bass" fly rods and their write-ups include the point that they meet tournament requirements.

I...

Josh,

That was a pretty nice bass.

The local market butcher/bass fisherman told me a few years ago that C-111 goes clear to Lake Okeechobee. I just followed it on Goog Earth from the stretch...

Re: Everglades Holiday Park

Here's a pic of my daughter's first LMB caught on the other end of C-11 on her first go at them, three to four miles from it's outlet into the Atlantic.

She was using a giant poppers on an 8wt...

Flygrain,

I also wonder about the flash when fishing mirror flats to tailing fish late in the day. That's the only time I've fished for them in recent years because of the crowds of people on all...

I've not fished for bass that far north , but it's good bass fishing on most all of the canals from Lake Okeechobee south for sure. Even the canals in Miami are good for bass and peacocks.
