Re: Some 8wt insight if you please...

BigJim has given you a lot of good advise. The watching of you back cast is a good way to find out if you are letting you back cast finish before the forward cast is started but IMO don't get...

Re: Cleaning a soiled cork grip.

Most of my older rods have a lot of dark stuff on the cork. Just like my old Medalist reels with all the paint chips, that dirt cost me a lot of time, effort, and money to show all the fun I have had...

Re: Some 8wt insight if you please...

Bass aren't particularly leader shy. Just try some 12 or 14# about 4 or 5'. I would think that the size fly you are talking about should be no problem on a 6wt. . If they are heavily weighted however...

Re: Set-Up For Bluegills

I agree that a 5wt will do a fine job for sunfish. ....And even bass.....But in small tree covered streams my tool of choice is a 3 or even 2wt in a 6 to 7' length. I fish a 8 to 14 craft foam spider...

Re: Fishing satchel cheap

I am tempted to order one of these. I used to have a heavy canvas WWII gas mask bag that was given to me that I used for my UL Spinning tackle. Regretfully it came up missing. I now have 2 heavy...

Re: Cleaning a soiled cork grip.

The Sweetandsalt idea of taking the rod into the shower is a good one IMO. I am 67 years old and I don't know that I have ever cleaned one of my rod corks but one never knows! I would NEVER tell...

Re: This is how to try our rods!

I hope they never bring anything like that to our area....:teef: I don't need any more rods and I am sure there would be several that I would find absolutely nessasary. :D

Re: Your fishing preference

I smile warmly every time I see a $40,000 bass boat being towed down the road behind a $60,000 dollar tow truck because I know that is one less jerk that I have to mess with on my little streams 2...

Re: Fly line Question

fly fishing is much easier with a floating fly line. A sinking line mostly requires the fly to be completely retrieved before making another cast. Not so with a floating fly line. If you want to slow...

Re: Actually, What Are My Basics?

Abel Clippers......absolute requirement......If you have a rod, reel, line, leader, and a fly you are ready.

Re: fly line stretching

Just get a small 's' hook to keep in the truck. Put one 's' thru the line loop and hook the other end of the 's' to your bumper or whatever is handy and stretch to your hearts content.

Re: Anyone try the new Air Lock strike indicators?

I haven't used bobbers for many years except on Reelfoot Lake when we fished the cypress tree roots with bee moths and that has been over 20 years ago but if I find some of them I am going to give...

Re: General Saltwater Combo

For SMB a 5 to 7wt...for LMB 7 to 9 wt depending on the fly size you intend to throw. For fishing the salty surf a 7 to 10wt with a 9 wt being my choice. Too old and fat for a 10wt..Get a fast rod...

Re: the F word

I, too, can use factory lingo with the best of them but I only use it in the proper place and company. There was a comment above that our young are educated. I do take exception with that. Sarah...

Yepper.....put a new tiptop on it and if it makes you feel better add some thread to match the guide threads. You will never know the difference.

Re: LTB Short 5wt rod

I would second the Eagle Claw but I would recommend the 6 1/2' model. The 7' er is fine but IMO it fishes better with a 6wt WF line than a 5wt WF... A DT 5might work better than the 5 wf though. The...

Re: Musky on a Fly

Zippy.....I thought you said that you would be fishing in 18" of water. If so you don't need a sink tip. If you are going to dredge some deep water for them then get a full sink. The advantage to a...

Re: How to make a fly reel heavier?

I personally prefer to have the outfit to be slightly reel heavy. I would not add weight to the reel. I would add it to the reel seat on the end of the butt cap. Lead tape cut in circles the same...

Re: Musky on a Fly

It seems that the OP suggested that he would be fishing shallow most of the time. A floating line would be my recommendation. I don't fish pike or Musky but I would think that they are similar. A 40#...

Re: Selecting a flyline before you buy a rod?

Buy the line you like and then forget the rod. Just cast with your arm like Lefty does in his demos.

Re: Trolling?

From my understanding of history Rip is spot on. Drag was mentioned above. Many reels had no 'drag' except a clicker and fishermen had the skill to boat fish without 'drags'. Many a big salmon and...
