Just say "Thanks, but it's about us, not me."
Go back on a vacation next year and fish then.

Re: So you want.....

"S — “S” stands for stop sign. Flashing red light. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200. You’ll notice I mentioned “undivided attention” up above. That, my friends, is hugely important. The best...

Re: Line Weight vs Rod Weight

It's become like a speed limit - just a suggestion.
You need to cast a rod before you buy, trying lines above and below the listed weight, to find out if the rod feels right TO YOU.

Re: Up lining or Down lining a fly rod

Wouldn't the taper be within the first 30 feet? Doesn't the taper just change the distribution of the weight within the first 30 feet?

William Joseph makes a nice pair. i don't know how much they cost, mine came on a used Confluence chest pack. They work really well, though.

Use the above tape suggestion, changing it until you've found the shape that feels best to you. Take the rod to a rod builder and ask him to replace the grip with one of the exact same shape and...

Re: Weight questions

You can overline or underline any rod for the immediate situation. The question is: should you need to?

Re: 7'6" vs 8'6"

Take both. The 8'6" will be better for holding line off the water for better drifts.
If the currents aren't too bad and you can wade closer, use the 7'6.
Either is a good back up to the other in...

Re: Orvis Recon or TFO BVK

Get the Recon.
I got the 904-4 and it's shown me that I'm more accurate than I thought.
This rod is good at 10 feet, 20 feet and 30 feet. And it'll shoot loooong if you do your part.

Re: A Newbie's First Fly Fishing Attempt

On a lighter note, you're either a fantastic in-law, or they're trying to give you a reason to go fishing instead of being around your wife.

Go to a fly shop, explain that you're a beginner and ask for help.
