Re: Albright...

Yes, they are following the fine print of the policy on their website. But the fine print (which you have to search to find) isn't the real issue. When you sell an entire 5-piece rod for $180 ( =...

Re: G Loomis NRX - Which one?

If I wanted another trout rod and didn't already have a 9' 4 weight IMX (or any other 9' 4 weight), the 9' 4 wt NRX LP would be at the top of my list. (For lighter lines I like the more delicate...

Re: Blue upright

Blue Upright is an old English pattern. The modern Blue Quill and Blue Dun are very similar, with just some minor material substitutions. Iron Blue Dun and Black Quill are also similar, but darker...

Re: Lamson Guru question

I don't have a Guru but I do have several Lamson Litespeeds and Velocitys, with a similar design. Yes, the wide spool can be a problem, especially if you have the spool fully loaded with line and...

Re: Best of the mod. to mod/fast past & present ?

I've got a couple IMXes that I'm quite fond of, but I think they are pretty fast rods. I usually overline my 8 wt with a 9 wt line.

(On other older models: it's best to be clear whether you mean...

Re: My first reaction was "You have to be kidding?" Gov is now telling you how to toa

When you consider how many little kids roast how many marshmallows on Forest Service land in the course of a season, it makes sense that the Forest Service would have written something about it -- if...

Re: is a winston rod good?

The 8 1/2' 5 weight IM6/WT model is not the "TMF" Tom Morgan Favorite -- that's a 2 peice 8' 4 weight. However, if it is fitted with a smaller sculpted cork grip it is the "JWF" Joan Wulff Favorite....

Re: Lamson Litespeed Question

Good advice. I've got both the 3.5 and 3.5x Litespeeds. The 3.5x can hold a #9 line with 200 yd of 30# dacron backing. The 3.5 can barely hold a #8 with 200 yd of 20#. I've also got a couple of...

Re: online vendor

I first heard of them when Kauffmann's Streamborn went out of business and Red's sold off the inventory. Bought something from them at the time and the transaction went smoothly. Since then they...

Re: Vintage reel questions

I would suggest an Orvis CFO III or Hardy Featherweight as the best of the best, but they aren't cheap. The Orvis Madison mentioned above is a good suggestion, as would be the Orvis Battenkill...

Re: 5wt VS 6wt

As others have pointed out, the difference between a 4 and a 5 is not that great. Everything you say here about the 5 would be an even stronger argument for a 6.

No problem.

Re: $500 Rod Option?

Toss in $200 or so from your own pocket and you can get that McFarland rod -- in glass or graphite, your choice.

Re: Best Insect Repellent?

I used plenty of DEET when I was 11 because it was the only thing on the market. I'm still here 45 years later with no ill effects that I am aware of. But I find Picaridin to be less...

Re: Best Insect Repellent?

Picaridin is as effective as DEET but is safe for fly lines. Comes in 7% regular concentration or stronger 15-20%. Brands include Cutter Advanced, Sawyer, and Natrapel.

Re: Orvis C.F.O.

In the early 90's Orvis switched the CFO material from cast aluminum to machined barstock. At the same time they introduced a disc drag model, but kept the existing spring-and-pawl models as well. ...

Re: Orvis C.F.O.

S&S nails it, as usual.

I love 'em. I have half a dozen of them from the "made in England" days, in sizes 123, III, and IV. (Of those, only the III size was retained in the current Abel-made...
