Re: Where Are Your Rods?

I keep my rods & reels (and other sporting equipment - guns, bows, etc.) stored in various places. My house, my truck, and my shop.
I figure if disaster (fire, theft, etc.) strikes I'll still have...

Re: Took a break from deer hunting

Thanks for the replies!

Zonker, that's it! I have a hard time remembering the names sometimes. :o

We lost all the frozen meat this spring when the freezer went out. Luckily we had some canned,...

Took a break from deer hunting

Just too warm today to go deer hunting (60 F) so I drove to the local lake.
The hole below the spillway looked good to me....

Re: First bass on a fly rod

Way to go!
Bass are always fun on the fly rod. Like that fly, too. Looks like it would be a good pattern to add to the fly box.

Re: Royals Win!!! Royals Win!!! Royals Win!!!

And the former Reds pitchers were a big part of their success.

Wonder why the Reds finish last in their division?

Re: Anyone use a fly rod to throw rubber worms?

Tie a SanJuan worm the easy way.
Buy some #10-#14 hooks (Kahle hooks work great) and some Berkley PowerBait Honey Worms. Just thread the worm on the hook and it's ready to fish - no vise or thread...

Re: Sunfish flies

Was catching bluegills last week with a #12 stonefly nymph fly. Decided to see if maybe a bass was feeding so I tied on a #10 Cypert minnow. Continued to catch bluegill.

Re: Colder Weather, Colder Water

Fish deeper & slower and sometimes you'll find a few hungry ones.
Some of my best bluegills have been from cold water.

Re: Home Waters

Not many creeks with public access close to home, but I have a few ponds and one lake (state park) that keep me entertained. A 5 or 10 minute drive and I can be catching fish.

season is about over so......

I decided to take the 2wt (8' TFO Pro) out for one last trip. We've had plenty of rain and the water was high, but I picked a spot where the current was swirling slowly near the bank and dropped a...

Re: Tough Bluegill scenario...

This past week they were deep here in Ohio. A san juan worm allowed to sink to 5-6 feet worked, though.

Re: mailman left another long box today

I haven't really used much but #10-#14 for bluegills with it so far. I did try a #6 with dumbell eyes and it felt too heavy for my setup (with a #5 tippet).

Re: mailman left another long box today

Been fishing with the CT rod & Drift reel for a couple months now, and after a few sessions on the water it feels like it belongs in my hands now.

With about any new outfit it takes me some time...

Re: Cat on a fly

Nice fish!
Catfish always put up a good fight when I hook one on a fly rod. The best description I can come up with is the "bulldozer" of fish species. They like the bottom and never fail to provide...

Re: Bait on a Fly Rod?

In some situations the fly rod is a big advantage with bait.

As I said in an earlier response the local lake gets stocked with hatchery rainbows that have no chance of survival past a month or two...

Re: Hybrid Stripers

My only experience with them is in the Ohio river in a warm water discharge in sub-freezing weather. Using an 8wt single hand and/or an 8wt switch rod.
Big rod + big fly = small fish....

Re: Bait on a Fly Rod?

Bait fishing is a good way to catch fish you do not intend to release, but intend to keep for dinner. The problem with live bait is that most fish don't just nip at it for a taste, but they eat it!...

Re: fly fishing during heat wave

Not so much a matter of not biting, but more of being deep or in thick cover I'd guess.

Re: Morning with the 3wt

I have 5 or 6 3wt rods, and never really felt "under gunned" with them in most of the ponds & lakes I fish.

Right now I'm trying out a new Redington CT 5wt, but in all honesty several of my 3wt...
