Re: Gunpowder today.

Thanks for the comments & link!

In the past I primarily fished further upstream for trout, or way down in the RT 1 to Rt 7 area for bass. Last couple of times I fished for trout was up near the...

Gunpowder today.

Finally got a chance to get back to doing some trout fishing today. Wasn't anything special fishing wise, except spending some time with family which is always special, but I wasn't skunked either....

Re: Got my first vise in the mail today

Well, you'll do well with it! Fact is most of us start with a vise that's much cheaper in both price & quality. I started with a Thompson "A" vise. Not a bad vise, but still not up to the standards...

Re: Face mask sun-shield?

Rip, I can't believe that at your age you would ever worry about looking silly! I know I sure don't & could care less if I look "gay" out on the water!

Might be concerned if I was a...

Re: Who still uses a vest?

I have a couple of vests, a couple shoulder bags, which are actually Army surplus gas mask bags, and a couple of fanny packs, camo pattern of course!

IMO, they can all be very useful,...

Re: Are crayfish patterns worth trying?

Since I don't fish for trout often I can't say I've had success with cray patterns for them, but yes they do work. I also use them primarily for Smallmouths. My opinion of them is all the details...

Re: Face mask sun-shield?

I use them, but not the Buff brand. I like the Hoo Rag brand! Better prices & they work just fine! :)

Re: Short rods for big flies?

Well, longer rods do make landing fish more difficult, when you're alone & have to get the fish to hand but agree with you guys about more leverage for casting. That was my thought too, primarily for...

Re: Short rods for big flies?

I once talked to a custom builder about a 10' 10 wt & was told the extra foot would make the rod too heavy to want to cast all day compared to a 9' since the extra length is in the heavier butt...

Ah ha! A method to your madness!

Have done that as well, usually with little success when it comes to convincing the wife! :o

Re: When do you move up?

Excellent responses! My question, how long did it actually take to land that fish?

Fishing with any fly rod is not like fishing with other tackle where you might be able to man handle a fish to...

Re: 5 Weight Bass Flies?

No doubt, the fly rod weight any of us might use will be relative to where we fish & the conditions we might encounter. However, if only one rod is available to us, we have to make due with what we...

Re: 5 Weight Bass Flies?

In addition to what IA has posted, being you're tying your own, most flies can be down sized to fit the rod weight. Just a matter of proportioning.

However, I agree with him about a 5 wt not...

Re: Identify the bug / what patterns

I've fished "whitefly" hatches here in the past & they don't change color much once they die at least not right away. The water surface & surrounding area will be littered with them. Looks like it...

Re: Identify the bug / what patterns

Have no suggestions for specific patterns, but perhaps some type of emerger pattern since you say they're sipping from the surface.
