I too didn't buy much in terms of decent clothing or other nice stuffs outside of my fishing stuffs and I used that as a bargaining tool to "reason" with my wife.

Jim, I totally agree if we can roll/switch cast to cover the whole river why bother the overhead cast and risk snagging the flies. I wrote it just for the sake of emphasizing the overhead cast...

I think it depends on the length and the physical weight of the rod, we need to be a logger to over head cast a full spey rod, but I think as long as the rods are in 10'-10'6" and 5oz-6oz any tree...

In my opinion the shorter than 9ft rod for tournament fisherman are more like marketing gimmick, but I am no tournament fisherman so I wouldn't know for sure.
