Re: Lessons learned the hard way

Tippet conversion
https://swittersb.wordpress.com/2010/05/15/fly-fishing-tippet-x-size-to-pound-size/

Of course some material is stronger than others, I believe 5x fluoro is stronger than 5x...

Re: Lessons learned the hard way

I find it odd that a company will sell you 25yds of 'fly fishing tippet' at $15, but the same company will sell 200 yds of similar diameter line for $20-30.
I'm not sure if there is a difference...

Re: Carp and Catfish for spring and summer

I caught a little catfish on a black leech today. There were some carp around but they are pretty spooky to get a shot at.

Blind cast for the cats, sight fish for the carp in shallows.

Re: Fly Fishing/Camping Colorado

I would try to fish the rivers flowing into Grand Lake (very near where you are staying). I believe you can fish the canal/tailwater between Shadow Mountain Res. and Grand Lake also. Having a...

Re: Do you talk at/ to the fish?

Once when I was having particularly bad luck I started said,
"Here, fishy, fishy, fishy..."
And caught one a few minutes later.

Just noticed silver creek put up the same video I was about to!

Re: State of our wild Fisheries

The inshore waters of the North Carolina coast are one of the last places where inshore gill-netting is allowed on the east coast, and the fishing pretty much sucks... There is a huge debate about...

Re: Do you like to fish alone?

If I am wading, it is my favorite way to fish. If I'm on a boat, it's fun to have company.

Re: So I won the caption contest, what happens now?

Thanks for the responses guys... Looks like I might finally get a reel for my switch rod! I did a double take when I read that I won; I enter almost every month (usually sure that my offering is...

So I won the caption contest, what happens now?

About a week ago I found out that I had won the January photo caption contest, and eagerly awaited a PM or some other correspondence to tell me what to do or expect next. Having heard nothing for a...

Re: El Paso / Rio Grande?

Not sure about the fishing, but El Paso is a bit of a rough town! Watch your 6 if you know what I mean.

Re: Is fly fishing an elitist activity?

I think it is perceived as elitist by many spin and bait fishers... And yes, I do feel like I am engaged in a morally superior endeavor when fly fishing (but when it's windy or I'm on a baitfishing...

Re: Glenwood Springs in late May??

Depending on the weather this year, it could be pre-runoff. Frying pan is your best bet as it is dam controlled, Roaring fork is good through town and south of town. If you can afford a float trip...

38, started at about 30. Hadn't fished since I was a kid and fell in head first once I got started again.

Re: North Carolina Trout Trail

I would visit Asheville. I've only been there once, but there is nearby access to 5 rivers from small to large. I believe we fished the north fork of the MIlls river and had a great couple of days...

Re: Looking into getting into the Kayak game

Ha! For $5400 or even half that one could be in a pretty decent john boat... I know its not exactly the point, but after a year of frequent kayak fishing, I really want a boat with a motor:o ...

Re: Looking into getting into the Kayak game

I got my kayak under a similar budget constraint. I found a decent 'entry level' angling kayak at Dick's Sports about this time of year. One of the paddle keeper/bungee tie-offs was broken, and I...

Re: Never fly fished

A 7'6" 3wt is kind of a specialty rod in my opinion. If the stream you are fishing is small, then it might work great. I do love fishing my short 3wt on small water...

But, a 9' 5wt will be a...

Re: Taught or self taught?

You're absolutely right. I've learned a ton from this site and others, as well as from fly shop employees and other guides. When it came to being on the water, it was almost always just me though....

Re: Streamer rod weight?

To add to the above post:

I have owned a couple of Cabelas rods. They are great for entry level fly fishers or for having an 'expendable' rod. However, if you are rough on your gear as I am, you...

Re: Streamer rod weight?

If you only have a small selection of rods, go for the 8wt. You'll be able to cast larger streamers and cast into the wind better.
That said, I love my 7wt. I'm an 'Odd' guy, having 3, 5, 6, ...
