Fitch Tail, a salmon and trout wet fly
While sorting photo files I came across this fly. Perhaps you've never seen it. I tie many of what you might call obscure patterns most of which are much older than I am.
Hook: Single salmon size 2 - 8, your choice, I use an old bronzed #4 here
Thread: Black silk
Tag: Narrow flat silver tinsel
Tip: Golden yellow floss
Tail: A short crest feather from a golden pheasant
Body: Black floss
Ribbing: Medium flat silver tinsel
Throat: Several turns of red / brown hackle tied down and back to form the throat
Wing: A fairly generous amount of Fitch Tail hair
Head: Formed with black silk and lacquered
This recipe will make a chunky little wet fly that will catch trout in the riffles darn near anywhere. It was tied to fish and has managed to catch two trout for me thus far.
