Low Water Spey / Trout & Steelhead Fly
I use weight or lead heads or both, I always need weight. If you fish Steelhead, I call them trout because we only have rainbow trout here. Depending on how close you are fishing to the ocean they can all be sea run or steelhead like trout.
It took a while but this is one of a set of wire body flies I have made for getting down a little better. Like all the others it needs a name so I gave it one. Beowulf - copper body; Tying Recipe; Hook: Jackson spey 1.5 bronze Thread: Black 0/8 Tag: Vintage gold sunrise tinsel, very gold & wide Tip: Black floss Tail: Short golden pheasant crest Butt: Black ostrich Body: Rear medium copper wire; Front peacock herl ribbed with grizzly hackle Wing: Matched sections of a golden pheasant tail feather Collar: Hereon gray burnt spey tied back, short for low water or full for standard tie. Here is another from the same family, looks similar but there are significant differences in the dressing. Tomahawk; |
