You won't do any better than a Picket Pin

Here's one Larry tied with a "squirrel underwing".
Jimmie's Salmon Fly

I was glad to see that "picket pin". Never seen one, but like it.

Best part is, it rides hook point up. I can drag it on the bottom and it rarely hangs up. Complicated to tie though.

For a long time now, I've been wanting to try to imitate a green sunfish, as bass around here hit them readily. So far nothing looks right. Looking at a tail of a fox squirrel I shot while hunting this winter, I realized it might be just the ticket. It's got some of the right colors already built in. If I can figure out how to post a pic, I will.

Here's my general thoughts:

Squirrel tail for black body and orange fins.
Wood duck flank feather for the yelow/cream underbelly
A blue craft yarn for the blue specks on the body and head area.

Red fox squirrel nymph: Red Fox Squirrel Nymph - Dave Whitlock Fly Fishing Info Center. Nice somewhat beginner fly, uses squirrel hair for a dubbed body.
