For tailwaters and the Colorado river next summer?!
I used a 35mm articulated shank from 'fish skulls'
attached to a Gamakatsu SC15 #1 hook (super sharp! no rust!) Edit: hook rides up on my version.
Vanilla Marabou or matuka grizzly tail. (did one of each above)
Grizzly rabbit strip tied into both hook and shank. Pierced at hook, secured at hook eye, secured again underneath fish skull on shank.
Dubbing rope body wrap under palmered grizzly matuka. I used gold for one, UV calibaetis for the other.
Wrap hackle over the dub body and luck out a few fibers for flash.
Tie in tan mallard barred flank as cheeks.
Whip, glue, and slide fish skull over (size before glueing, may need a dubbing wad to make it fit right).
Add thread anchor to keep head on, I like red for a gaping mouth look.
Add eyes, thin coat of hard as hull over the head and thread anchor.
Fish around here seem to love gold as the water comes up in the spring.
