Default Black Nymph (Don Martinez)

Don Martinez was from California and had a successful fly shop in West Yellowstone Mt. in the '30's and '40's which was passed on to Pat Barnes and now Bob Jacklin, so if you hit the shop in West Yellowstone try to feel "it" .... the history.

One of Martinez's hot flies was the "Black Nymph".

My version:
Thread...6/0 black Danville
Hook...#8 sproat wet fly hook
Tail..guinea hen fibers
Body...black rough dubbing with a seal consistency ribbed with silver mylar tinsel
Thorax...green dyed raffia grass
Hackle throat....dark partridge or mottled brahma hen

You gotta drag the fly around in the water and rough it up a bit before it will really look good.

We tied that pattern a bunch at our club tying nights. One of our guys fished it almost always on the west slope of the Sierra's CA. The brighter green the wing case seemed more effective.

Are you fishing that for steels? or 'just' trout?

Great pattern! I see a black bead head on this (damn addiction).
