Identify this fish

What type of catfish is this, anyone know? Caught in Jacksonville, FL pond on a crankbait.

It didn't have the deep fork in the tail like a channel cat.

I was also thinking bullhead. I have never actually seen a bullhead that big.

Wouldn't a bullhead have a more squared-off tail?

No fork = bullhead, some kind of fork = some kind of cat, is how I was taught....

That would bust the heck out of almost every Bullhead record around. Most are well under 3 pounds. I think the tail is to forked to be a Black Bullhead. Plus it's to long and skinny I think to be a Bullhead. It's awful black to be a Channel, but I wouldn't write that idea off just based on that. It's shaped more like a Blue Catfish. Do you have any other pictures of it?

Looks likes channel or a white catfish that picked up the black coloration from the pond environment . Definitely not a bullehead due to tail shape. Have seen channels similar to this by Sea World.

Re: Identify this fish

Sure looks like a White Cat to me due to the shallow forked tail, the rounded anal fin and the anal fin doesn't seem to have over 23 rays in it. if it does have 24-29 anal fin rays it's a channel. Also your pic seems to show a squat looking fish which says White with the Channels being a bit more elongated and the Blues the longest. Also look at the jaw if upper and lower nearly are even it's a white, with the channel having an overbite, the blue more of an overbit and the flathead a bad underbite.:)

Need a better magnifying glass!
