That question has lots of answers depending on waterway, time of year, weather, etc. This month, January, low and slow is the ticket as the bass are deep and sluggish. Crayfish or hellgrammite patterns work best for me. Perhaps my favorite fly this time of year is a black Murray's Marauder, size 8ish.

great pics and blog! my fiances family has a house in holden beach and a house in pinehurst. i am thinking about getting a 16' skiff for the intracoastal the shallotte and cape fear rivers and inlets. i'm dying to sightfish for reds from it. can't wait to explore new places. have you done any fishing in brunswick or wilmington county?

Thanks James! Yes indeed in Brunswick and around Wilmington. The redfish pictured was from down in that area.
