Default Rod Wt for French Broad smallies?

I've never flyfished for smallmouth but hope to soon. I have a 4 wt, 5 wt and 8 wt was wondering what to go for next. Some outfitters I've spoken with like a 6wt for NC smallies but I have wanted a 7 wt for some time. Not sure why. If 6 is enough rod, probably makes sense to get that before a 7, right?

If you have a 4,5,and an 8 you are good i fished smallies this spring with Sages 7'11" bass in 6wt and it done a real nice job also fished a G-Loomis 9' 6wt rod and this also performed well.So to answer your question yes a 6 will do fine but if yoou want the 7wt it will work as well guess its really all in what you want to buy.

I think no matter how you look at it you already have the top and bottom end of the rod weights people use. I'd go out there and bend that 5 in half on some big bass and decide from there. You may not need more. Maybe you will.

I've seen the FB river around Asheville. Pretty water!

Ps. I only throw a 5wt for bass

Might be just trying to talk myself into buying another rod. If Winston made a 7wt GVX, would have already bought it. Had a chance 2 years ago to get a Z-Axis 7wt with a close-out price and I passed. Still kicking myself.
