Default Fly hatch calendar for trout

I have reviewed the local resource agencies to determine which flys are hatching during the year, but cannot seem to find the right data.

Does anyone know what is expected to hatch in western NC (mountain area) during May and June for trout? Hopefully someone with first hand experience would be kind enough to share what is active on the waters..

Hi dadbeachbum,

Welcome to the forum. I don't know what flies would be appropriate for that time frame in NC. If you want first hand information call the Fish and Game in NC and ask to speak to a fish biologist. I am sure they will have some information for you. I have found fish biologist to be a treasure trove of information about their area.

While there may be some variations in N.C. streams, and differences from year to year because of weather and other factors, the following is only a decent prediction of hatches:

May:

March Brown, size 12-14. (Early May, late morning to mid-afternoon)

Gray Fox, size 12. (Early May to mid-May, late afternoon-dusk)

Light Cahill, size 14. (All month, mid-afternoon-late afternoon)

Green Drake, size 8-10. ( Limited, all month. Late morning-late afternoon & late afternoon-dusk)

Sulphur, size 16-18. (Limited, all month. Mid-afternoon-dusk)

Yellow Stonefly, size 14-16. (All month. Morning & late afternoon-dusk)

Speckled Gray/Brown Caddis, size 12-16. (All month. Mid-morning-late afternoon & late afternoon-dusk)

Gray/Brown & Green Caddis, size 16-20. (All month. Afternoon)

Mottled Brown & Green Caddis, size 10-12. (All month. Late afternoon-dusk)

Dark Dun & Black Caddis, size 12-14. (All month. Mid-day-late afternoon & late afternoon-dusk)

June

Light Cahill, size 14-16. (All month. Late afternoon-dusk)

Sulphur, size 16-18. (All month. Late afternoon-dusk)

Dun Variant, size 10-12. (Limited. All month. Early-late afternoon & late afternoon-dusk)

Yellow Stonefly, size 14-16. (All month. Early to mid-morning & late afternoon-dusk)

Speckled Gray/Brown Caddis. (All month. Late afternoon-dusk)

Gray/Brown & Green Caddis. (All month. Late afternoon-dusk)

Mottled Brown & Green Caddis. (All month. Late afternoon-dusk)

I hope this helps.
