Default Roanoke Rapids---striper run

A friend and I just got back from 2 days of fishing stripers on the Roanoke River-most of the fish were 15-20" with the big females spawning and not interested in eating.

We used an 8wt with 300-400 gr sinking lines and clousers---the sparsely tied flies worked better for me than the more heavily dressed.

The fish were just getting interested in topwaters---I got one on a white Bob's Banger and my friend had a couple hits on a crease fly.

We had 30-40 fish days but some of the regulars could easily double our success.

Nice, our ocean stripers (cows) have returned to the coast of NH & Maine already, not many runts yet, but they will be here by the end of this week.

Hi Jimw
Thats a nice one
I heard of a 9# caught sunday and i hooked a heavy one that didnt shake but just started swimming upstream but the hook pulled---the week before, some fish ran a little bigger but our guide said they showed scarring from gill nets---that age group has been missing.
This was an above average fish that were being caught.
