Default Fish will rise as Harpeth River dam falls

The Harpeth River’s fish habitat is expected to improve with the demolition of a low rise dam.

After the $870,000 project is complete, the flow of the river will be improved, resulting in more small fish such as darters and shiners for smallmouth and largemouth bass to feed on, along with other game fish down river.

“From an ecology standpoint, it’s really interesting what happens to a river such as the Harpeth after a low-rise dam is removed,” said Dorie Bolze, executive director of the Harpeth River Watershed Association.

The concrete dam, which is located in Franklin, was 6 feet, 6 inches in height. Demolition began Wednesday.
