Default First 2 Handed Rod for Steelhead

Hey Guys,

Starting to get more and more into steelhead fishing in the Salmon River in Pulaski NY and am thinking about picking up my first 2 handed rod. I currently have an Orvis Clearwater 10' 8wt, which I purchased as an all around rod I could use for salmon, steelhead, & smallmouth bass during the whitefly hatch. Since then steelhead have really grabbed my interested so I would like to pick up a little bit higher end steelhead dedicated 2 handed rod. The Clearwater will remain my salmon/small mouth rod and act as a steelhead backup rod, so with this rod staying steelhead specific is all I'm really concerned about. I don't think I want to jump fully into the world of spey yet so I have been looking at some switch rods. The 2 that have caught my eye so far are the Beulah Platinum Switch 10'8" 7wt and the Scott L2h 11'6" 7wt. Was curious if anybody has used either or both of these rods and if so what your thoughts on them are. Also, if you have other recommendations I'd love to hear that as well. Currently I am mainly tossing egg patterns, but I would like something I can also toss streamers with.

Thanks
Mike

"Beulah Platinum Switch 10'8" 7wt and the Scott L2h 11'6" 7wt."

The 7wt is a ''good number'' an all around rod. You can handle a very large fish at that line weight.

The Beulah I've read several good reviews, my personal concern would be the short length (sub 11 feet). 10'ish inches between the two doesn't sound like much but when it comes line control/mending/etc., that's quite a difference. The Scott I can't comment on but they've been building rods for a very long time.

Sage VXP 7133-4 and they are still on sale/clearance.

Takes a 450 grain Scandi Rio Steelhead also still on clearance.

I got it for the Salmon River NY & Catt.

you already have a 10' SH , go to the game with both guns loaded and it is better to learn the casting on a longer rod.

That's the advise I was given.
That's the advise I followed.
They were 100% correct.
I am very happy.
Done deal.

So if I'm reading this correctly your suggestion is to skip the switch rod and go right for the spey...correct?

If I were to go with the rod you suggested or something similar would a 8wt reel still be a good fit? For instance would a Nautilus NV G-8 be a good reel for that rod or would I want to go w/ something bigger?

Yes, I am saying skip the switch. I just got started in the 2 hander this past spring and asked the exact same questions you are asking now and the ones you are going to ask .

That was just a quick summary I wanted to fire off , sorry if I came across like I know something. I had to jump back in my truck and go do some more plowing Yeah !

Thee advise and rod rec are just regurgitated advise from my 2 hand casting instructors (Fkrow here ) and as I said they are dead nuts on the money.

pretty much all the experienced 2 handers here agree (advised me) it is a lot better to learn on the longer (13') rod and it is just right for the Salmon. I have a 10' 7 wt. I am surprised FAE didn't say that , he told me the longer rod too ?

The vxp is a very good 2 hander, Jerry (one of the instructors , loved it) and it was also about $350 , far far better than the Reddington or Echo starters. I liked it enough that the day after the class I got a VXP 5120 for trout

cant help with the reel , I don't know the Nautalus and I used a old Teton 9-11 because I had it and it balances ok , problem is it will not hold a Skagit line I don't think , works for the scandi
