Duschee Creek, Minnesota "MONSTER"

This trout was caught opening day on Duschee Creek right in Lanesboro. Unofficially 30” and 12lbs. Caught on a red worm. Per Steve Koltz Fisheries Manager for the area...it is a native and not a hatchery fish. Trout was kept and angler plans on mounting it.

I called the hatchery super there. The hatchery is really close to where the trout was caught. Steve told me that the hatchery has male trout in it that go 24 inches.

I asked about flooding there and fish washed in. He said NO trout escape he has good containment.

He said it was not that uncommon on that stream.

The sucker spawn is on and this fish must have followed the suckers and is obviously a carnivore and could swallow a sucker less than 12 inches in one bite.

Len: Wow, that was a monster Brown trout, kind of sad that the guy that caught it keep it for mounting. Nowdays, most folks will just take measurements and a bunch of photos to the taxidermist.

That trout is obviously a carnivore and a cannibal I bet

It ate lots of its own kind.

It planted its seed for almost a decade I bet.

There is outflow from the fish hatchery into the stream at that point, which means that it stays perfect temp all-year round. This means tons of active, feeding fish. I talked to a friend who guides in the area. According to him, big browns like that one will come feed on the 10-12" stocked rainbows that are constantly active at the outflow, producing many good fish.

That stretch of the Duschee is really well known and gets a ton of pressure. It also holds the distinction of being wheel-chair accessible. There's a nice trail, and access to about 8 pools that can accommodate people with limited mobility right up to the edge of the bank. Its for that reason that I don't fish there anymore. I'm a healthy young guy that has no problem hiking in miles to fish. Old farts and people with disabilities have so many fewer options for trout streams that I feel a bit unethical putting more pressure on that particular spot.

Edit: A bit of a nitpick, but I want to point out that native refers to brookies. Wild would be the word to use.
