minnesota trout fishing

so, im moving to minnesota just for the winter and am curious if you can fish for trout all year long as long as its always catch and release. OR, is there actually seasons that youre only allowed to fish for trout.

Can anyone clarify, and if so where is the best place around minneapolis to wet a line. Im comming from colorado where i can always hit the river for a little bit of action, and would love to be able to escape for a bit whenever.

Thanks.

Minnesota does have seasons.

You can fish trout from January 1st until September 30th I believe. It's all C&R during the winter months, so keep that in mind. They close it down for three months during the fall to allow for spawning to take place without people yanking fish off of the redds.

When you get to Minnesota, head to a local fly shop and pick up the DNR's 2011 map book which will show you all of the trout streams, as well as the public access available on those streams.

This coming year, from what I understand right now, will be the first with brand new regulations allowing C&R fishing on ALL designated trout waters, instead of just a select few that were open to winter angling. Verify this with the DNR before you head out after Jan. 1st, but the way it stands right now, the rules are going to go in effect by then.

South of the border we are open all winter. Some streams have special regs but it you C&R and use artificial only then you don't have to worry about that.

Yup. Us more fortunate southern Minnesota residents head to IA from October-December 31st to continue chasing trout. And after the 1st of the year if I get a hankering to eat some fresh trout

You can also visit this page for a list and maps of all winter trout streams

Winter fishing can be a gas if the weather if cooperative. Scuds and midges are the easy way to produce some fish - tandem rig it, get deep, and be patient.

From Mpls., your closest spot is Hay Creek, which is no secret by any stretch, so be prepared for other people around, especially on a weekend when the weather is nice. Fishing behind other anglers will cut down on your catch rate, no question.

Regs: for 2014, all designated trout streams will be open for catch and release, plus the season got extended to October 15 from September 30.

Iowa's an option, but it's a long haul from the Metro if time is not on your side.

Though what onthefly suggests is quite accurate this past winter I probably fished a streamer 90% of the time with outstanding results. Those winter trout get crazy aggressive.

Agreeing with itchmesir on this one; if you like streamer fishing, never go out without a sinking size 6 oliver wooly bugger in the Minnesota winter season.

The Kinni open all year? That could be an option at about 45-60' from St.Paul...

google winnoa fly company - neat blog with some good MN focused fly fishing info.

Don't some of the streams in southeast Minnesota also have barbless hook restrictions too during certain parts of the year?
