Default Finally...

The weather was decent enough this weekend to get out and get after it without my eyelids freezing open. I fished a few different streams. The first stop had a ridiculous amount of shelf ice, so once wide open and fishable pools were not as promising.

I just focussed on the open pools and did some deep dredging with a scud and a variety of midge trailers. Click the image to open in full size.

I had hiked in quite a ways and intended to fish upstream on my way out (like I do all the time), but my intentions were cut short when another angler had walked in and fished downstream on the holes i was going to hit on my way out.

Oh well.

Fishing was better at stop two: no shelf ice, no other anglers, and rising trout. I did put on a dry and a midge emerger for a while and caught a few, but I stuck with the scud and midge combo for the most part and hammered away for a few hours.

Good day to get out, get some exercise, and catch a few fish in the process.

You're fortunate to have that much open water this time of year. There are a few creeks here with open leads but most are completely iced over.

Congrats on a great outing!

Ard: Its the same here in western Wyoming, the creeks and streams are pretty much frozen solid so the only option is to travel 90 miles to the nearest tailwater.

I'm jealous. I love everything about Minnesota's winter trout season, but the only time I get back to MN is to visit during the holidays. At least I can fish next year!

Greats pics. Thanks for sharing.
