I'm surprised. I've never actually caught a smallmouth but they look much more golden in color than I normally see.

ive caught smallies that are bright gold and others that are almost black! its really cool how these fish vary color

heres a lighter color phase, from a clear pool.

VERY nice fish! We planned on targeting smallmouth for the first time on with the long rods this weekend but water levels in PA and NY look like that may not get to happen.
