I love it (no I really don't) when I'm flyfishing from shore at the local lake and someone comes up and says "I didn't know they have trout in this lake".

I've caught Drum, Catfish, Largemouth, Spotted Bass, Smallmouth Bass, White Bass, Yellow Bass, Sauger, Walleye,, and various bluegill/sunfish species in that lake, all on flyrod, but never a trout. Of course, with water temps of 67 degrees already on April 2, it isn't exactly trout water. I have to drive 1.5 hours upstream to the cold tailwaters to catch Rainbow, Brown, and Brook trout.

nice fish!!! like said above leech patterns for catfish work good! just use a black wooley bugger. its my fav summer fly. You can catch alot of diff species of fish on it. I have caught catfish, gills, largemouth, smallmouth, gar, steelhead, rock bass etc. funnest cat I caught was tossin a black bugger on my 3wt under this huge bridge. set the hook and the fight was on! landed it on the 3wt. it was like fighting a huge steelhead. had to wear him out slowly and all and try not to horse it and break the tippet or rod. good stuff! am gonna target some cats this summer I think..

Wooly Buggers in Black, Olive, or White are the ticket on Old Hickory. Also Green and White Clousers. (All these, other than the White Bass, Skipjack Shad, and Sauger, were caught while targeting Bluegills.)

Anything near the bottom. Especially crayfish patterns skipped along the bottom though. Also weighted streamers with white, UV, and silver flashabou.
