With those orange/white leading edges on the pectoral and pelvic fins, and just a hint on the caudal and dorsal, he has some green sunfish in him, but he sure doesn't look like a first generation hybrid. Makes me wonder if grandma wasn't a hybrid, but he's pure bluegill from then on.

Quite a bruiser, whatever his lineage!

Re: Oof, some bruiser bluegills

Once upon a time I caught them with a spinning rod. It was, just fishing. Now I that I've taken up a fly rod, I have not had so much fun fishing pan fish. I have a 5 wt and they can put a bend in the rod, especially when they head for the weeds. When they hit the popper they feel and act bigger than they are.

Trout may be sexy, but the Bluegill is real fun.

That's a hybrid bluegill, i.e. a cross between a bluegill and a green sunfish. And it's a pretty amazing one at that.

Here's one I caught a little over a month ago that weighed 31 oz.:

A day chasing BIG bluegill is almost as good as it gets. This summer I went to my favorite bluegill honey hole a few times a week, and it's a 40 mile trip one way. Nonstop topwater action on BIG 10"+ gills every cast, anything you would throw they would absolutely destroy. The fight in these beasts in unbelievable on a 3wt glass rod, heck they even put a bend in a pretty stout 5wt graphite rod. Then there was the occasional bruiser largemouth....oh how I miss summer already. Don't get me wrong, I love chasing pretty much any fish, but bluegill have to be near the top of the list.
