Default First largemouth on a fly

I decided to do some night fishing after work last night. Not wanting to drown in a river, I went to a local lake that I knew had a lot of flats. Glad I did.

I caught this guy on a fly that I came up with and wanted to test out. He took it and I thought that I was stuck in some lily pads until I felt a couple head shakes and he tried to take off for the next county.

After a quick fight I got him in the net and he measured about 12 inches. Not a lunker by any means, but he beats the other largemouth that I aught a year or two ago and reached 5" if he was lucky.

After getting this guy, I'm seriously thinking about giving trout a rest and going over to the Dark Side.

PS Sorry about the crappy pic.

Congratulations on your first!!!!!!!!!!
Nothing wrong with targeting largemouth bass.

Not to take away from your bass with a picture of my catch, but
I've caught a few memorable ones already this year, too.

Luckily I didn't have a way to measure it, so I can just estimate it at about
4 pounds
......... or was that inches????
I get confused with measurements.

Oh well, I can tell people it was longer than my rod handle!
........... or was that the reel seat?
I'm not a rod builder.

LOL... I am jealous of you both. Dying to get out and bass fish but I have a little one on the way within a week. And I need to get my hands on a heavier rod.

Bass were what I fished for when I began fly fishing 35 years ago. I couldn't stand the idea of fishing for stocked trout, and stayed away from the local lake until it was picked clean by the can 'o corn crowd. I prefer smallmouth to largemouth, but I don't discriminate.

Congrats, Anthony! BTW, John Gierach fishes for largemouth in ponds and lakes, and has written quite a bit about this. He fishes everything from large lakes to small farm ponds, and also fishes at night for bass. He also fishes for bluegill, and says that he purist friends tease him about that. I fish for sunfish/crappie/perch regularly.

I gotta tell you Ant, I switched more to the Dark side this year and am having a blast on white bass, sauger, hybrid bass and blue gills so far. All on a white zonker!

Thanks guys. I hope you took that pic to get a replica made Wabi.

Frank, I've done my share of fishing for sunnies too. At least that what I've always said when I went to the lake and caught nothing but sunnies. "Of course I was fishing for those sunnies..." It's nice to catch something different.

I'm also going to do a bit more of it, I found some back roads to the lake that shaved 20 minutes off of the drive there.

All right Ant! There's more than one reason why bass are the number one freshwater game fish n the country - and it's not just because of distrilbution and numbers.

They are the perfect fish for a fly rod and popper and I thnk the best way to improve one's casting - particularly "pick ups and lay downs" and accuracy. A great percentage of my fishing consists of pickups and laydowns without any false casting. Fishing for bass from a canoe or small boat in the late afternoon into evening consists almost entirely of that.

Cheers,
Jm
