Default Baby Smallmouth Pattern

I have been aching to start tying my own. I just got my first vise and a bunch of materials and started with a couple of standard clousers to get my bearings.

I've been thinking lately about a baby bass pattern based on the clouser. Now I know that the success of the clouser is in large part attributed to it's sparsness but I'm a sucker for realistic interpretations (more for me than the fish). I also wanted to try my hand at techniques like tying in tails and dubbing bodies.

So here's my first original. Go easy on me (I know that nose finish is a bit rough). I started by tying in black tail feathers layered in behind the gold/green/brown feather to emulate the tail and striped body. Then I tied in some olive hairs ear body dubbing reinforced with copper wire for durability and a little flash. From there it's the usual clouser.

"Hair's Ear".

spell check doesn't catch those. And yeah, I know "original" is a stretch.

Looks pretty good there, and that pattern sort of already has a name: a "Half and Half" It was concieved as a combo of a clouser and a Lefty's deceiver. Clouser Half and Half

Looks like you came to the same creative conclusion that Lefty and Bob did, impressive!

Thanks for humoring me Cliff. It figures that about the only way to come up with something remotely new in a sport hundreds of years old would be from ignorance. Now, will it catch fish? That's the question.

I think it will, but that depends much more on operation of the rod/line than the fly attached to it.

You know not to set the hook with a sharp tug with that style of hook, right?
