Default The Muskie Mix

Took my float boat out today for the infamous muskellunge. Showed up and the wind was pushing a little harder then I had expected so I slowly worked my way up the lake against the wind to find cover in a cove so I could get my ten weights line in the air without taking a 5/0 hook to the back of the ear.

The cove was filled with baitfish running from some sort of predator that was pushing them to the top and breaking the surface. Big splashes that get your adrenaline pumping just from the sound. I worked around a lily pad patch pretty relentlessly and drew a gar out that followed my fly the rest of the way to the boat. She was big enough to make me think it was a pike until I saw the dinky nose sniffing the tail of my fly.

Next move of the day got a little bit more exciting when I saw the fish I had come so far to pursue. She floated slowly out of the deep water to investigate the disturbance my fly had made. I paused, she paused, I gave two soft strips just to get the tail to flicker, she crept in closer. I gave a longer strip to make her predatory instinct kick in; she darted after my fly and opened her mouth ready to inhale my hook wrapped in four layers of bucktail and flash. She stopped just inches shy of the goods. Had second thoughts I suppose. We had a nice stare down about a 3 feet from my rod tip as I waited for my heart to explode from adrenaline overload. After about 45 seconds of that, I decided to play keep away with the figure 8 routine. That really turned off the switch. Two flicks of the tail and she was gone from my life, but the memory of her remains...until next time

Heres something to show from last week...A nice northern
