Nice fish!! I have been common carp fishing up here in Illinois for the first time ever. Probably got 10 fish in the last three outings. I've been sneeking up and casting under mulberry trees. The carp wait for the ripe berries to drop and rise on them every time. Clown eggs smeared with floatant are the ticket!! Bam....nothing like a 15-20 pound carp on the rise. Surprisingly tough fish to catch. In the 1 to 3 feet of water I'm fishing the fish are very very spooky.

I've been actually fishing the Desplaines river right through the town of Riverside. About 35-40 miles from St Charles. I would imagine there are some stretches of the Fox river in and around Geneva/St Charles that would be spotted with mulberry trees as well. It would be well advised to take an evening walk and try to find a few trees overhanging the bank. I've been having an absolute blast! Didn't get out today...but I'm dying to get out tomorrow...

When I first started fishing for grass carp I recalled watching kids in the Amazon fishing for Pacu, a primarily vegetarian fish. They tied a nut on a string and would smack it on the water to sound like a nut falling from a tree. The Pacu would come up and the kids would then spear it.

I employed the same strategy (without spear) with a yellow popper to catch my first grass carp. When I saw the grass carp in the area I smacked the water and laid low. After a few minutes I would see the dorsal fins coming. Now, I typically use an all white dry fly to match the cottonwood and cattail "hatches."

It is a blast to catch a 40" fish that is chasing seeds as they blow across the pond's surface.
