I understand that rule, and some tournaments do not allow fly gear but it's rare. When the rule stands it is primarily for safety due to long casting.

The rule was made to deter the Radical rod lengths that were getting out past 14'. Flipping sticks. Not to disqualify fly anglers. We all know that most bass fishing will always be better with spin or casting gear. It was not a rule to avoid flies and fly rods, ever that I know of.

The tournament trail I have fished has allowed them at lengths under 8'. It is not a BASS tour though.

Intersesting to see what has been the motivating factor here with their rules.

I'd love to see KVD whip out a fly rod and throw a deer hair popper during a tournament.

I guess that I'd have to wait until Hell freezes over.
