Default Open Call for Popper Design Ideas

I like to have 4 or 5 new popper designs ready each year, so as I head into winter production, I thought I might pick my fellow warmwater fly fishing friends' brains.

A few years ago I introduced the Goldfish Popper from a customer request and that became a popular popper that sold and fished well. This year, I combined a few patterns into the Carolina Bluegill Popper (see DiverDan's 41" Northern Pike), introduced some throwback Red & White Poppers and a Shad/Mullet hybrid for lake and surf.

This past year, I experimented with a fluorescent yellow perch pencil popper that has done so well in trials this summer and fall that it will definitely be a new offering for 2013. I have also been working on a bass fry popper.

Well, more to the point here. Is there anything, in terms of surface bugs, that you find yourself saying, "I wish somebody would make _____________."

I am a bit of a mad scientist when it comes to designing poppers, so don't think your idea is too far out to be worth trying.

A long body popper, mid sized with a very small Colorado blade spinner hanging off the back end. Plus a rear weighted, long bodied, one, aka a Zara Popper or Zopper Spook!
Should finding the ultra small blades be a problem, an appropriately shiney or colored false little fingernail would work. ( I make my own but would buy were they available)

Yes! I'd love to see a zara spook styled popper! Something light enough though to throw with 6 or 7 wt

This may seem a little far-fetched, but id like to see a muddler minnow popper, i think that'd work well.

Id also like to see a really accurate swimming frog popper, the bass seem to go nuts over the hackle feathers that mimic legs on my deer hair bugs.

Saltwater sized and colored flies such as a pinfish popper. Or mullet that would be awesome

Long body saltwater popper with a cupped face for extra splash! One of my favorites that I make( but after seeing how great yours look I'll bet you could make it better) is a freshwater slider style head all black with no markings black hackle collar black bucktail tail. Deadly in the evening on Smallies and river predators!

I'm the only person I have ever seen do it so it might be a good one for you. On longer poppers I have started making them as tube flies. When fish run into weeds with longer poppers they have a tendancy to get the fly turned and pop loose. I made a long one for my friend Bill and he lost a bunch of Smallmouth on it. I think it may have been partly the hook being flexible (or at least a bit flexible). Mostly though the fish have a long pivot point with the eye and the bend being so far apart. With them being tube flies all that happens is the fish pops the fly off the hook but remains hooked. In fact I have not made a popper that isn't a tube fly in at least a year and a half. Even the smaller ones.

Dan you are the man! That popper is super! I believe that your twist theory is a reality and your solution perfect! Great video and nice SMB! And for the cheap people you can use used Q-Tips so as not to waste. Haha!
